Monday Night Football Season 12 Episode 10 Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions

  • October 19, 1981

In the twelfth season of the beloved Monday Night Football, fans were treated to an exciting match-up between two classic NFC North rivals, the Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions. This was the tenth episode of the season, and both teams were looking to keep their playoff hopes alive with a pivotal win.

The Lions had a rocky start to the season with a 2-3 record, but they had won two straight games coming into this matchup, and their offense was starting to heat up. Quarterback Matthew Stafford was having a solid season so far, and he had a talented group of receivers to throw to, including star wideout Calvin Johnson.

The Bears, on the other hand, had a 3-2 record and were coming off a surprising loss to the Minnesota Vikings in their previous game. Their defense, typically one of the best in the league, had struggled in that game and was looking to bounce back against the Lions.

The game got off to a slow start, with neither team able to score in the first quarter. But in the second quarter, the Lions struck first with a touchdown pass from Stafford to Johnson. The Bears answered back with a touchdown of their own, a short pass from Jay Cutler to running back Matt Forte.

The Lions would take the lead once again in the third quarter, with another touchdown pass from Stafford to Johnson. But the Bears responded with two more touchdowns of their own, a one-yard run by Forte and a 57-yard bomb from Cutler to receiver Alshon Jeffery.

The game remained close throughout the fourth quarter, with both teams exchanging blows. The Lions had a chance to tie the game with a late drive, but their last-second attempt fell short, and the Bears held on for the victory, 28-21.

The Bears offense was the star of the show, with Cutler throwing for 353 yards and two touchdowns, and Forte adding two more scores on the ground. Jeffery also had a huge game, catching nine passes for 199 yards and a touchdown. On the Lions side, Stafford threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns, with Johnson hauling in both scores.

Overall, it was an exciting game between two classic rivals, with plenty of big plays and drama throughout. The Bears came away with the win and improved to 4-2 on the season, while the Lions fell to 3-4. But with plenty of games left to play, both teams were still in the hunt for a playoff spot and would look to build on this game as the season went on.
