Monday Night Football Season 15 Episode 17 Chicago Bears at San Diego Chargers

  • December 3, 1984

The Chicago Bears travel to San Diego to take on the Chargers in a pivotal matchup for both teams. Coming into the game, the Bears are sitting at 7-7 and in desperate need of a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Meanwhile, the Chargers are also fighting for their postseason lives with a record of 6-8.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Bears are led by quarterback Jay Cutler and running back Matt Forte. The duo has been effective all season long, but they'll need to be at their best against a stingy Chargers defense. San Diego's defense, which is ranked in the top 10 in the league, will be looking to shut down the Bears' passing attack and force them to become one-dimensional.

The Chargers' offense, on the other hand, is led by quarterback Philip Rivers and running back Melvin Gordon. Rivers is having another fantastic season, throwing for over 4,000 yards and 28 touchdowns. Gordon has also been a workhorse for the Chargers, rushing for over 900 yards and 9 touchdowns. They'll be facing a Bears defense that has struggled this season, particularly in defending the pass.

Both teams understand the importance of this game and what it could mean for their respective playoff hopes. The atmosphere in San Diego is electric as fans pour into Qualcomm Stadium in hopes of seeing their team emerge victorious.

The game starts off with a bang as both teams exchange blows in the first quarter. Rivers leads the Chargers on a quick scoring drive, with Gordon punching it in from the goal line. The Bears answer right back with a long touchdown pass from Cutler to wide receiver Alshon Jeffery.

The second quarter features more back-and-forth action, with both teams trading blows on offense. Rivers connects with tight end Antonio Gates for a touchdown, but Cutler responds with a touchdown pass to Martellus Bennett. The game is tied at 14 heading into halftime.

The third quarter sees the Bears start to take control of the game. Cutler leads a long touchdown drive, capped off by a rushing touchdown from Forte. The Chargers try to respond, but their drive stalls deep in Bears territory and they're forced to settle for a field goal.

In the fourth quarter, the Bears put the game out of reach with another touchdown from Forte. The Chargers try to mount a comeback, but their offense sputters and they're unable to put any points on the board.

In the end, it's the Bears who emerge victorious with a final score of 28-17. Cutler finishes the game with over 300 yards passing and 3 touchdowns, while Forte adds over 100 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. Rivers puts up a solid performance, throwing for over 300 yards and 2 touchdowns, but it's not enough to overcome the Bears' balanced attack.

The win keeps the Bears' playoff hopes alive for another week, while the Chargers' postseason dreams take a big hit. It's a bittersweet victory for the Bears, as they'll need to continue to win in order to keep their playoff hopes alive. But for now, they can enjoy a hard-fought victory on Monday Night Football.
