Monday Night Football Season 25 Episode 16 Dallas Cowboys at New Orleans Saints

  • December 19, 1994

The 25th season of Monday Night Football is coming to an end, and as we approach the playoffs, this matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and the New Orleans Saints is one to watch. Both teams come into this game with something to prove, and the atmosphere in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome is electric as the fans await the kick-off.

The Dallas Cowboys are currently sitting at third in the NFC East after a mixed season, with a record of 6-7. Riding a three-game losing streak, this game is a must-win for the Cowboys if they want to have a shot at the playoffs. Star quarterback Dak Prescott has been out since Week 5 with a gruesome ankle injury, and while backup Andy Dalton has been a steady replacement, the offense has struggled at times. Running back Ezekiel Elliott will need to step up and carry the offense against the Saints' formidable defense.

On the other side of the field, the New Orleans Saints are one of the hottest teams in the league, with a record of 10-3. Led by future Hall of Famer Drew Brees, the Saints' offense has been clicking on all cylinders, despite some key injuries on the offensive line. The Saints' defense has also been playing at a high level, allowing fewer than 20 points per game on average.

As the game gets underway, it's clear that both teams are playing with a sense of urgency. The Cowboys come out swinging, with Elliott carrying the ball on the first four plays of the game. But the Saints' defense holds strong, and the Cowboys are forced to punt.

Brees and the Saints' offense come onto the field, and they waste no time taking control of the game. Brees drives the ball down the field with ease, completing passes to Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas. The drive ends with a touchdown pass to tight end Jared Cook, and the Saints take a quick 7-0 lead.

The Cowboys are not deterred, however, and they answer back with a touchdown drive of their own. Dalton connects with wide receiver Amari Cooper for a 28-yard touchdown pass, and the game is tied at 7-7.

The rest of the first half is a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading blows. Kamara continues to be a threat for the Saints, catching passes and making defenders miss in the open field. The Cowboys' defense manages to keep the Saints' offense in check for the most part, but a late touchdown pass from Brees to Emmanuel Sanders gives the Saints a 21-14 lead heading into halftime.

As the second half gets underway, it becomes clear that the Cowboys' defense is starting to wear down. Brees continues to pick them apart with short passes and quick slants, and Kamara is making big plays both as a runner and a receiver.

The Cowboys' offense, on the other hand, is struggling to find a rhythm. Dalton is having trouble finding open receivers, and Elliott is being shut down by the Saints' defense. A missed field goal by Cowboys kicker Greg Zuerlein only adds to the frustration.

The Saints, meanwhile, are in full control of the game. Brees orchestrates another touchdown drive, this time ending with a pass to Kamara, and the Saints extend their lead to 28-14.

The Cowboys refuse to give up, however, and they manage to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter. Dalton connects with tight end Dalton Schultz for a touchdown pass, and the Cowboys cut the lead to 28-21.

As time winds down, the Cowboys get the ball back with a chance to tie the game. But a crucial interception by Saints safety Marcus Williams seals the victory for New Orleans, and the Saints improve their record to 11-3.

Overall, it was a hard-fought game between two talented teams. The Saints' offense was just too much for the Cowboys' defense to handle, and the Cowboys' offense couldn't keep up with the Saints' scoring. As the season winds down and the playoffs loom, it's clear that the Saints are a team to watch.
