Monday Night Football Season 29 Episode 8 Pittsburgh Steelers at Kansas City Chiefs
- October 26, 1998
The much anticipated matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Kansas City Chiefs is finally here, as the two teams meet at Arrowhead Stadium for a primetime clash on Monday Night Football. Both teams have been among the elite in the NFL over the past few years, and this game should give us a good indication of where they stand in the hierarchy.
The Steelers come into this game with a 6-3 record, good for first place in the AFC North. They've won four of their last five games, including an impressive victory over the Baltimore Ravens in Week 9. Pittsburgh's offense has been humming along all season, led by future Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. "Big Ben" has thrown for over 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns through nine games, and his favorite target has been wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, who has already eclipsed the 500-yard mark and has found the end zone six times.
Defensively, the Steelers have been one of the best units in the NFL. They're allowing just 19.0 points per game, good for fourth-best in the league, and they're ranked first in total defense. T.J. Watt has been a force off the edge, racking up nine sacks already this season, while Minkah Fitzpatrick has been one of the best safeties in football. The Steelers' defense will have their work cut out for them against a high-flying Chiefs offense, but they have the talent to keep Patrick Mahomes and company in check.
Speaking of Mahomes, the Chiefs' dynamic quarterback has been putting up video game numbers again this season, throwing for over 2,900 yards and 25 touchdowns through nine games. He's been without his top target, wide receiver Tyreek Hill, for much of the season due to injury, but that hasn't slowed down the Chiefs' offense much. Travis Kelce has been a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses at tight end, logging 769 yards and six touchdowns so far this season, while rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire has been a steady option out of the backfield.
Defensively, the Chiefs have struggled at times this season. They're allowing 22.3 points per game, which ranks 15th in the league, and their pass defense has been particularly vulnerable. However, they do have playmakers on that side of the ball, with defensive end Frank Clark and safety Tyrann Mathieu leading the charge.
This game has all the makings of a classic, with two high-powered offenses and two stingy defenses going head-to-head. The Steelers will be looking to prove that they're a legitimate contender in the AFC this season, while the Chiefs will be looking to stay atop the AFC West and keep pace with the likes of the Baltimore Ravens and the Tennessee Titans in the race for the top seed in the conference.
Who will come out on top in this showdown? Tune in to Monday Night Football to find out.
