Monday Night Football Season 33 Episode 2 Pittsburgh Steelers at New England Patriots

  • September 9, 2002

In the second week of Monday Night Football's 33rd season, the Pittsburgh Steelers travel to Foxborough to take on the reigning Super Bowl champions, the New England Patriots. Both teams are looking to build on their week one victories and establish themselves as early contenders in their respective divisions.

The Steelers are coming off a hard-fought win against the Buffalo Bills, where their defense came up clutch in the fourth quarter, holding the Bills to just six points in the second half. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger looked sharp in his return from injury, throwing for 188 yards and two touchdowns, while running back James Conner powered the ground game with 107 rushing yards and a score. The defense, meanwhile, was led by T.J. Watt, who had two sacks and a forced fumble, and newcomer Minkah Fitzpatrick, who intercepted Bills quarterback Josh Allen in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

The Patriots, on the other hand, dominated the Miami Dolphins in a 43-0 blowout. Quarterback Tom Brady threw for 264 yards and two touchdowns, while the defense held the Dolphins to just 184 total yards and intercepted Ryan Fitzpatrick three times. New England's ground game was also impressive, with Sony Michel rushing for 85 yards and a touchdown and rookie Damien Harris adding 73 yards on the ground in his NFL debut.

Heading into this matchup, the Patriots have historically had the upper hand against the Steelers, winning their last five meetings, including last year's regular season matchup and the 2017 AFC Championship game. However, the Steelers are looking to turn the tides and prove that they can compete with the best of the best.

In order to do so, they'll need to stop Brady and his potent passing attack, which includes receivers Julian Edelman and Phillip Dorsett, as well as tight ends Ben Watson and Ryan Izzo. New England's offensive line, anchored by left tackle Isaiah Wynn and center Ted Karras, will also be key in keeping Brady protected and opening up holes for the running game.

For the Patriots, they'll need to contain Roethlisberger and Conner, as well as wide receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Donte Moncrief. The defense, led by linebacker Dont'a Hightower and cornerback Stephon Gilmore, will also need to continue their strong play from week one and force Roethlisberger into mistakes.

With both teams looking to start the season 2-0 and establish themselves as early frontrunners in their respective divisions, Monday Night Football's second game of the season promises to be an exciting matchup between two perennial playoff contenders.
