Ep 1. Pilot

Earl is a man who has been on the wrong side of the law for most of his life. He's never been one to take responsibility for his actions or think about the consequences of his behavior, until one day he hits rock bottom and realizes he needs to turn his life around. He decides to make a list of all the people he has wronged in the past, and sets out to make amends.

In the pilot episode, we meet Earl and are introduced to his world. We see him gambling at a casino with his friend, Randy, and losing everything they have. They decide to go to a convenience store to buy some lottery tickets, but while they are there, they witness a man trying to rob the store. In the chaos, Earl is hit by a car outside the store and is knocked unconscious.

While he is in the hospital, Earl has a dream in which he is inspired to make a list of all the bad things he has done in his life. When he wakes up, he is convinced that this is the right thing to do and sets out to start his list. He enlists Randy's help, but Randy is skeptical at first, wondering how they will ever be able to make up for all the things Earl has done wrong in the past.

To start his list, Earl goes back to the convenience store where he was hit by the car, and tries to make amends with the store clerk, Darnell. He apologizes for all the bad things he's done in the past, including stealing from the store, and asks how he can make it up to him. Darnell is understandably skeptical, but Earl insists that this is the right thing to do.

Earl's next act of kindness is to help a woman, Joy, who is having car trouble. He offers to fix her car for free, but it turns out to be more of a challenge than he anticipated. Eventually, he does fix it, but in the process, he and Randy also end up getting paint all over Joy's clothes. Earl feels terrible about this and adds it to his list of things to make up for.

Throughout the episode, we also learn more about Earl's past. We see him stealing a car when he was younger, and also abandoning his girlfriend, Joy, after she became pregnant. Earl realizes that he needs to make amends for all of these things as well, and adds them to his list.

The episode ends with Earl and Randy sitting on a couch, looking at the long list of things Earl needs to make amends for. Randy starts to feel overwhelmed, but Earl assures him that they can do it. He knows it's not going to be easy, but he's committed to making things right and finally taking responsibility for his actions.
