NHL hockey is a simple game and easy to understand. Each team has five players and one goalie on the ice at a time. Whichever team scores the most goals after three, twenty minute periods wins the game. If the game is tied after regulation, both teams earn a point in the standings and the game moves into a five minute overtime period where each team has four players and a goalie to start. Whichever team scores in overtime wins the game. If the game is still tied after overtime, the game changes to a shootout format. In a shootout, there is no time involved. The coach of each team selects three players to try and beat the defending goalie in a one on one situation. If the score is still tied after each team has three attempts, the shootout moves into a sudden death mode where whomever scores first wins.
