Nuclear Family follows the story of John and Lynn, a young couple trying to survive in the wilderness after a nuclear apocalypse. The couple and their young daughter, Pauline, must navigate the woods and stay away from potential enemies including a gang of bandits called the Beserkers. The Beserkers are led by a cold and calculating leader simply known as The Man. The Man has a child, The Son, who tries to become the leader of the Beserkers. The couple's main mission is to locate their missing 8-year old son, Grant. The Beserkers make search efforts dangerous by stealing resources and destroying temporary shelters. The family meets other survivors on their journey and must determine the difference between friend and foe.

John, the main character, is an ex-soldier who is now trying to keep his family alive by any means possible. As the world is devolving into violent, lawless behavior, Lynn seeks to protect her family while also doing the right thing. Pauline, although only 11, is trying her best to be brave in the face of the family's new circumstances. The family is joined by Pauline's friend, Zoe, an expert circus knife thrower, whose skills prove to be crucial to the family's survival.

Nuclear Family stars Corin Nemec as John and Kinsey Packard as Lynn. The show first aired October 2012 in the United States as an original SyFy digital series. Vuguru, an independent studio, financed the series. The series is written and directed by Kyle Rankin. Nuclear Family is produced by Jamie Burke and executive produced by Kyle Rankin, Jesse Albert and Clay McCall Keeley. This show is filmed in Topanga Canyon, which is located in the Woodland Hills area of Los Angeles, California.

After John rejoins his family, they head with The Man to find the Tent City, and hopefully Grant. The Man questions some of their assumptions about the bomb that went off, and gives them some new information that they never expected.

Lynn and Pauline stop running and wait for John. The Man tells John that their son, Grant, is in the Tent City. As they hear his men approaching, John stays behind while Lynn and Pauline move ahead with their hostage.

The Man, a self-help writer, is signing books for fans. When he sees an explosion, he immediately jumps in his car and calls his son, excited by the change about to come. Returning to the present, The Man's son and followers are looking for him.

John is thrown back in the arena against his earlier betrayer. With his wife dead and nothing left to live for, this man sacrifices himself to help John and his family escape, allowing them to capture The Man and get away.
