This animated television series is based on the award winning book by the same name written by Yūichi Kimura, with animation provided by Group TAC. The story revolves around how a goat named Mei seeks refuge from a storm in a barn one night, developing a friendship with another animal there named Gabu he can neither see nor smell. The two decide to use a special password to be able to recognize the other the following day. But Mei is shocked when he discovers that his fellow refugee that night was not a goat!

Giro and the others learn that Gabu is friendly with the goats! Gabu is thrown into a cave in Bakubaku Valley, as May is troubled by nightmares in her cell on Sawasawa Mountain. In her dreams, May sees her mother and a younger Giro.

Rosso the goat spots Gabu and May playing together! Confronted by the grown-up goats, May finally admits that he and Gabu are friends. The goats think she's been tricked by the wolves, and she is thrown into a cell.

In Fukabuka Forest, May is attacked by Jess, a lone wolf she hasn't seen before! Gabu rams into Jess to rescue her, and Jess, who was already badly hurt, falls to the ground. Gabu and May run off.

The elder of the goat herd hurts his back thanks to a prank pulled by May and her friends. There is talk of moving to Yugeyuge Valley, where there's a hot spring that can help with the pain.

19. Bibi's Lost

May comes across Bibi, a young deer from Pukapuka Mountain who's separated from the herd. Seeking to help Bibi, May asks Gabu about the mountain, but all Gabu can think about is how delicious the young deer sounds to him.

18. The Rainbow

After a passing shower, May's grandmother invites her to come see the ensuing rainbow. This puts May in a bind, as Gabu said he'd be waiting for her at Kirakira Hill the next time there's passing rain.

17. The Cavern

Gabu and May meet up at the rocky and unstable Bokoboko Plateau, only to fall into a hole. They slide down a long slope into a vast cavern that has no obvious way back to the surface.

16. One Rainy Day

Due to persistent rain, Gabu and May can't play outside. They both look up and curse the rain, and as if on cue, the weather becomes dry for many days, causing the grass the goats eat to dwindle in supply.

15. Teach Me, Gabu

Gabu and the others pair up with the wolf cubs to serve as their teachers. Gabu is teamed up with Boro, who has trouble understanding when his teacher doesn't attack a deer because he's not hungry.

May goes to visit Mesomeso Mountain with her grandmother. May thought it was meant to be a day trip, but they wind up staying the night in a cave.

13. Mii Is Missing!

After playing with Gabu, May returns home and hears from Tap that Mii has gone missing after going off to pursue her. May wants to go search for her, but is stopped by the grown-up goats who tell her that it'll be too dark and dangerous before long.

12. The First Trip

May, Mii, Tap and Moro decide to travel to Parapara Plain to go see a black baby goat. To get there, they'll have to travel through the dangerous Magamaga Forest. Tap takes the lead, but only manages to get them more and more lost.

Rumors fly among the goats that one of them has befriended a wolf. Meanwhile Usaru, a monkey with a penchant for lies, returns home to the area.

10. It's Not Easy Being Gabu

Lala, the prima donna of the pack, spots Gabu ditching the group in order to meet with May. She wants to go along with him and begs for a "souvenir" when Gabu refuses.

Giro's sister Lolo gives birth to a wolf cub. The wolves decide to hold a party in Bakubaku Valley to celebrate the birth, on a day when Gabu and May intended to meet up.

Troubled by sleeplessness and hunger due to a toothache, Gabu comes to his meeting place with May -- a meadow with commanding views of the area -- only to find she is not there. He takes a nap in the growth in the middle of the meadow.

One day, the black goat Kuro, who has a pleasant personality, arrives at May's home in Sawasawa Mountain. Handsome and affable, Kuro is a hit with the kids and female goats.

A flock of swallows arrives at Sawasawa Mountain, where May lives. The swallows enjoy putting what they see and hear into their songs. Two young swallows, Pippi and Chicchi, see Gabu and May getting along with each other.

Gabu and May are eating silverberries on a hill. Without thinking, Gabu blurts out that he'd prefer meat over berries any day. He tries to backpedal, claiming he doesn't like goat meat, but May can't believe him.

Gabu is downtrodden because Giro, boss of the wolves, is angry at him. He puts on a strong, macho demeanor around May to keep him from worrying, leading May to believe that Gabu's going to be the next boss.

Gabu and May continue to meet, keeping their friendship a secret to their respective kin. Mii, who May treats as her younger sister, develops a high fever. The medicinal herbs that can lower the fever are located in a high, dangerous place.
