The show takes place in 2105 and the technology of the time includes faster-than-light travel, artificial intelligence, and teleportation. The ship they are on, the UMP Cruiser, is a state-of-the-art vessel that is designed to withstand dangerous missions. However, due to the incompetence of the crew, the ship is constantly in danger and they often find themselves in bizarre situations that they are ill-prepared for.

The characters in the show are all unique and have their own quirks, making for a diverse and interesting cast. The standout character is Zalian Fletcher, who is played by Joel Hodgson, who is best known for creating and starring in the cult classic TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000.
