In Party of Five season 1 episode 5, titled "All's Fair," the Acosta children continue to navigate their new reality of living without their parents. Emilio deals with the repercussions of letting his sister Lucia sneak out to a party, leading to a confrontation with their uncle. Meanwhile, Beto struggles with feeling out of place in school after being placed in a lower level Spanish class.
Val struggles with balancing her work life and taking care of her siblings, leading to a conversation with her boss about the importance of family. Meanwhile, Lucia begins to question her feelings for a boy she met at the party, leading to a heart-to-heart with her older sister.
As the family tries to come to terms with their new normal, they must also confront the unfair ways in which society views and treats them as a Latinx family. When Val and Emilio attend a college information session, they are confronted with the realization that their family's financial situation makes it difficult for them to afford higher education.
"All's Fair" tackles important themes of family, race, and socioeconomic status. Through the Acosta family's struggles and triumphs, the show provides a poignant commentary on the challenges faced by many Latinx families in America.
