As Project Runway hostess Heidi Klum likes to say, "One day you're in and the next day you're out," and in the ever-changing world of fashion, sometimes a designer comes back into vogue. Such is the case with the returning designers of "Project Runway All-Stars." The popular reality show gives some of the highest ranking and memorable fashion designers from previous seasons a second chance at winning.

The spin-off series features a new hostess, supermodel Angela Lindvall in Season 1 and supermodel Carolyn Murphy for Season 2, as well as a new work room mentor, Joanna Coles, Editor-in-Chief of Marie Claire magazine. As with the regular Project Runway, the aspiring designers have a design challenge that they must complete in limited time with limited resources and present their work to a panel of judges. The All-Stars face designer and celebrity Isaac Mizrahi and Georgina Chapman of the Marchesa fashion line as regular judges. Each week, a guest judge joins the panel. In the first season of All-Stars, guest judges included fashion designers Diane von Fürstenberg, Nanette Lepore, Tommy Hilfiger, and Cynthia Rowley.

The All-Star producers have also increased the prizes awarded to the top designer. The winner receives an exclusive Neiman Marcus boutique in select stores and online, $100,000 in cash from L'Oreal, $100,000 in office space and technical equipment from Intel and HP, and the role of guest editor at Marie Claire magazine for one year, along with a fashion spread and other rewards to help establish their own design company.

Along with the more advanced prizes, the designers must contend with fiercer competition and more rigorous challenges. The weekly winning design no longer earns immunity for the next week's challenge and they are also vying against designers who have already been through the rigors that the show provides. The first Project Runway All-Stars cast included fan favorites Mondo Guerra (Season 9), Austin Scarlett (Season 1), Rami Kashou (Season 4), and Kara Janx (Season 2). The second All-Stars cast includes former runners-up Uli Herzner (Season 3), Althea Harper (Season 6), Wendy Pepper (Season 1) and Emilio Sosa (Season 7).
