Rainbow Fish is a children's animated TV series based on the classic book "The Rainbow Fish" by Marcus Pfister. The show was produced by Canadian animation studio Nelvana and aired on HBO Family from 1999 to 2001. The show follows the adventures of Rainbow Fish, a beautiful fish with shimmering scales of every color, who lives in an underwater world. Rainbow Fish is kind and generous, but he is also a bit vain and loves to show off his sparkling scales. However, he learns the value of friendship and generosity on his adventures with his fish friends.

The voice cast includes Christopher plummer as the narrator and introductor. He also voices a character named "Goby". Other voice actors providing the voices of the fish characters include Jonathan Wilson as Rainbow Fish, Justine Clarke as Blue, Peter Cugno as Red Fin, and Alexander Gould as Spike.

Each episode of Rainbow Fish has a moral lesson for kids to learn. Before he realized what he was doing, Rainbow bet Chomper and Stingo a round of kelp gushers that his team will win. Just before the big game, Rainbow finally looses his hiccups. In what Chomper thinks is a show of good faith, Rainbow decides to give him a taste of his winnings, in the form of an extra bubbly kelp gusher! "Santa Sword Is Coming to Town" All evidence points to Sir Sword being the beloved and mysterious Santa Sword. When Sir Sword is in need of a few "helpers" on Christmas Eve, Rainbow volunteers and hints to Sir Sword what he wants for Christmas -a Turbo-Clam Electro Glider. But it turns out Sir Sword just needs help delivering gifts to children at the hospital. Rainbow has a good time anyway, and he returns home to spend Christmas with his family. The next morning he opens his last gift... a Turbo-Clam Electro Glider! But how...?!

They both agree that just because people are the best of friends, it doesn't mean they'd make the best roommates. "Chomper, Master Thespian" Rainbow and Blue convince Chomper to play the lead role in the school's production of "A Catfish Named Stella". Their plan to keep Chomper too busy to pick on them backfires when his rehearsal partner is Ruby, and Chomper is rehearsing at Rainbow's house every day. Desperate to get Chomper out of his house for good, Rainbow gives him a bad case of stage fright, and he quits - only to have Stingo take his place on the stage, and at Rainbow's cave!

"Eviction Notice" Sea Filly's old piano teacher is being evicted from her home in the Mollusk Reef Villas. Phineas Gronch, a big-shot real estate guy plans to tear down the villas and put up a new shopping mall in its place. Rainbow and Blue are uninterested until they discover that Gronch has similar plans for Wanda's Café. They visit Gronch in his sleep pretending they are ghosts, and convince him to relocate his mall to the vacant town of Blue-Bottom Bay where he will save money, and homes! "The Vacation" Ruby and Aqua had their hearts set on Clam Springs for vacation, but Sol had already promised Rainbow they'd go camping. The men, claiming they are true "outdoorsfish", try to impress the girls with their advanced survival tactics, while Ruby and Aqua get along just fine with their inflatable tent and home-brought goodies. "˜Big Fin' is just a legend until he appears at the foot of their tent, but it's the girls quick thinking (and a few spurts of Calvin Clam Perfume) that sends the creature running.

"Pool Shark" Chomper's cousin, Slick is visiting Neptune Bay, and Wanda's Café is his new favourite hangout. Wanda has just set up a new pool table, and Slick looks like he's as good a pool player as they come. Rainbow is so impressed with Slick's talents, he agrees to become his personal assistant, and leaves Blue and Sea Filly behind. After several patrons lose to Slick, Blue introduces the idea that Slick might be cheating, and Rainbow devises a plan to have Wanda catch him in the act. "Halloween Under the H2O" Rainbow tries to get Sea Filly into the Halloween "˜spirit' by telling her that "a little scare never hurt anyone". While putting the finishing touches on his costume, he dozes off and dreams he's in a haunted cave. There he meets Dr. Frankenfish (Blue), his faithful assistant Seagor (Sherman Shrimp), and their scary monster experiment (Sea Filly). They chase him through creepy corridors until a frightened Rainbow awakens, startled to find Sea Filly in her monster costume, lurking over him!

"Sea Filly Needs a Helping Fin" After being teased by Rainbow and Blue about what a smarty-tail she is, Sea Filly is ashamed after getting a 'D' on her math test. Since she's always the tutor, she's too embarrassed to ask Rainbow and Blue for their help. Wise Wanda convinces her to trust enough in her friends to ask for their assistance. When she finally gains the courage to ask, Rainbow and Blue are more than happy to help her out, and her grades improve instantly! "Prince Blue" While researching a school project, Blue discovers that his ancestors were kings and queens. This discovery causes Blue's ego to inflate so much that Rainbow and Sea Filly get fed up with his stuck-up demeanor. Sherman Shrimp, who became Blue's personal assistant, accidentally comes across the correct family history information that proves that Blue's ancestors weren't royalty, but servants to royalty. Blue is devastated, but his friends help him realize that it's not who his relatives were, but who he is now that counts.

Chomper warns that she may have 'Clamblaster Fever' - an inability to stop playing the video game. She is still in denial until she misses an important game of clamball. Rainbow finally confronts her and she decides that her friends and her grades are much more important than a silly video game. "There's No Business Like..." Lobster Bisque and Crab Cakes reminisce about old times when they were almost successful performers. In telling their story to Rainbow and his pals, they become enraged at one another -each blaming the other for their misfortune in show business. Rainbow decides to have their song played on the radio, in hopes that they will remember the good times. Before they know it, they're singing and dancing for the amusement of several onlookers, and are back to their old selves once again.

"How Filly Got Her Groove Back" Sea Filly is being teased by her female classmates for being 'unfeminine', so she quits the finball team to become a cheerleader. Rainbow and Blue are sorely disappointed to hear that they've lost their star kicker. On the day of the big game, Sea Filly realizes that her talent is needed more on the field than it is on the sidelines, so she enters the game and scores the winning goal! It's then that she realizes that liking sports and having boy friends, doesn't make her any less of a girl. "High Tide Noon" Rocko Rockfish is a bully who makes Chomper and Stingo look like teacher's pets. He's stationed at Shipwreck Park, and he won't let anyone on the swings. Rainbow tries to stand up to him when no one else will, but he just ends up embarrassing himself. When he finally regains the courage to face him once again, Rainbow is surprised when Rocko backs down so easily. Rainbow then turns around to find a crowd of school kids backing him up -which they realize they should've done in the first place.

"The Bodyguard" Rainbow saves the life of Billy, a large Beluga whale. In returning the favour, Billy decides that he is in eternal debt to Rainbow, and becomes his personal bodyguard. This is great at first, but Billy frightens a lot of people, and gets in the way of Rainbow's fun. In a plan to get Billy to leave him alone, Rainbow accidentally gets caught in the Suction Pit, and Billy saves him from certain death. Finally, Billy no longer owes Rainbow, and he returns to life in the open sea. "Mom's Away" Aqua gets a job at Rainbow's school, but having his Mom around all the time is embarrassing, and he feels his private life is in jeopardy. So he convinces her to quit her job because she's needed at home, even though he's doing just fine on his own. When she resigns, Principal Gelfilte announces that due to Aqua's fund raising efforts, they will be getting a new hockey field, but because she's leaving, they won't be getting new hockey equipment any time soon.

"Moving Day" Rainbow overhears his parents talking, and sees them going over blueprints. He panics and gets Blue and Sea Filly to help him with a plan to keep his family from moving. Rainbow's parents are disappointed that the price offered wasn't to their satisfaction. Only it was the price of remodeling the cave to build an entertainment room for Rainbow and Ruby - not selling it! "Romantic Dinner" Sol and Aqua reminisce about all the times they've had to cancel their anniversary plans in the past. So this year, Ruby and Rainbow decide to make them a special anniversary dinner. Only Rainbow forgot about his school project that's due the next day, and Ruby forgot about her Prawn Lake rehearsal. The dinner is anything but perfect. But their parents are thrilled! Just the fact that their children thought about doing something nice, was the best gift yet!

During Mrs. Chips' visit, he discovers that she tells jokes, plays video games, and even has a family of her own. Rainbow learns that teachers are people...err... fish too! "It's a Wonderful Fish" Rainbow feels that everyone is neglecting him, so he wishes that he were never born. Suddenly, a guardian angel fish appears and shows him what life would be like if there were no Rainbow Fish. Wanda's Café is suffering without his business, his clamball team quit playing without his leadership, and his family -even his sister - is terribly lonely. He then realizes that just because people don't always have time to spend with you, it doesn't mean that they don't have time to love you.

He tries to explain that the ball actually landed and then bounced into his glove, but no one will listen. He finally confesses, and to his surprise, they're all proud of him! Blue learns that honesty is always more valuable than winning. "To Catch a Thief" Ruby's suspicious behavior and Rainbow's empty conch-bank lead him to believe that his own sister is stealing from the family. But it turns out that Ruby was just making his parents an anniversary gift. She was sneaking around because she didn't want Rainbow to find out. Little brothers aren't the best secret-keepers. His empty conch-bank is just a coincidence. He'd forgotten that he'd put his money in the bank for safekeeping. Rainbow will never jump to conclusions ever again!

So, Carl returns to his home and Ruby, Rainbow learn to recognize and respect different people, and different cultures. "May the Better Fish Win" Rainbow and Blue are so desperate to win the election for class president, they begin making promises to their classmates they can't possibly keep. Unbeknownst to them, Sea Filly is busy with an honest campaign of her own. When the three nominees deliver their final speech, it is Sea Filly who paints a realistic picture of a seamester, which has fun and education in mind. Rainbow and Blue forfeit their nomination and realize that Sea Filly is really the better fish for the job!

Rainbow, Sea Filly and Blue decide to remedy her bad superstition with a phony four-leafed sea clover. Just when Ruby is convinced her bad luck is gone forever, Rainbow confesses that the clover is a fraud, and this helps Ruby to realize that luck is just a state of mind! "Father's Day" Rainbow is not happy about having to do a project on his dad's occupation. He's embarrassed that his dad is just a factory worker and doesn't have an exciting job like Mr. Filly or Blue's dad, so Rainbow leads everyone to believe that his dad's a spy -a regular James Pond. When all the dads are invited to speak in Mrs. Chip's class, Rainbow thinks he's doomed, but he finds out that his dad does lots of foamy things at the factory, and his exciting stories win the class over in the end!

Much to her surprise, Rainbow and Blue step in when one of the "High Tides" makes fun of Sea Filly. In defending her, they realize that fitting in can be cool, but being a leader is much better! "Knights of the Coral Table" Sir Sword helps Rainbow with his book report by lending him a copy of "The Royal Knights of the Coral Table". As Rainbow reads, he finds himself getting lost in the story and is transformed into the hero -Sir Glows-A-Lot. His fantasy begins in the world of Clamalot, where he crosses the Sea of Terrible, battles the Knights of Nasty and rescues the princess from the Evil One. Sir Sword was right after all -a good book can transport you right inside the story!

"Campus Current" Sea Filly gets a job writing for the School of Fish newspaper, "The Campus Current". In her enthusiasm for journalism however, Sea Filly becomes nothing but a tabloid gossip columnist and no fish is safe from her probing articles. Rainbow comes up with a plan that ends with Sea Filly writing an untrue article about Principal Gefilte and losing her job. Sea Filly learns that real journalists have a responsibility to print only what they know is true. "Fish Alone" When Rainbow gets let out of school early one day, he returns to his cave to find that he is home alone. Excited at the prospect of having the entire cave to himself, Rainbow settles into junk food and his favorite cartoon. All is well until a special news bulletin announces that there are two burglars loose in his neighborhood. Hilarious antics ensue when the crooks show up at Rainbow's door and he sabotages all of their efforts, eventually ending with the police taking the two burglars away.

The family fears the worse the night of the festival but Rainbow surprises everyone with a very touching depiction of his family. "Rainbow's Pen Pal" Rainbow's pen pal Penny is coming to visit Neptune Bay. But Rainbow has been less than truthful in his letters to her, bragging about being rich and having famous friends. When Penny shows up Rainbow goes out of his way so that she will not discover the fish he really is. In the end, Rainbow discovers that Penny wasn't entirely truthful about her life either. Both of them learn that you don't need to lie to impress your true friends.

"Ruby Slips In" When Ruby feels like she has been dumped by her friends, she begins to spend time with Rainbow's. Sea Filly and Blue think Ruby is great, but Rainbow thinks that she is trying to steal his friends away from him. Competition ensues between Ruby and Rainbow but in the end when Chomper insults Rainbow, it is Ruby who steps in to stick up for her little brother. Rainbow learns that there are worse things than having your big sister around. "Working Fish" After much convincing, Wanda lets Rainbow work at her newly opened Candy Counter. All of Rainbow's friends are impressed with hid new job, and he plays it up by giving them free candy. Suddenly, the whole school is looking for handouts. Rainbow feels awful that he has let Wanda down but he learns that he must face up to his mistakes and try to make amends -even if it means washing dishes for the rest of his life.

"One Fish's Treasure" Rainbow ruins one of Ruby's movie star magazines, when he uses it to line his sea monkey bowl. When Ruby finds out she is very upset, but Rainbow belittles her - it's just a dumb magazine. Later, something "inconsequential" belonging to Rainbow gets thrown out. He gets very upset and quickly learns that it's important to respect the property of others, and that what is one fish's garbage is another fish's treasure. "Project Rainbow Fish" Claminator XII is playing on Saturday at the Bayside Finaplex! Unfortunately, that is also the day that Rainbow must do a community service project for class. Rainbow ends up doing half of his duties at the local library and heads for the Finaplex, but all afternoon he sees his friends having a blast doing their projects and Rainbow wonders why he feels so bad. Later that day Wanda sends him to deliver food to a shut-in and after spending time with the old guy Rainbow feels much better. Rainbow learns that helping others can be fun and very rewarding.

"Big Fifh on Campus" The principal is picking hall monitors for the new seamester. When Blue is chosen he lets his new found power go to his head, bossing his friends around and acting like a real jerk. Rainbow and Sea Filly want the old Blue back and in an effort to make him see the light they ignore him and pretend they are doing really cool things that he just wouldn't have time for with all his hall monitor responsibilities. Blue finally gets the hint and retires his badge. "Sibling Rivalry" Blue has a new baby sister, Turquoise, and she has become the center of attention, especially with his Mom, who doesn't seem to have any time left for Blue. Wanda tries to explain to Blue how demanding a new baby can be and that his Mom needs his help more that ever. But when Blue tries to help out it only backfires and ends up taking up more of his mother's time. In the end Turquoise captures Blue's heart and he realizes that having a baby sister might not be so bad.

"Sir Sword Goes Back to School" Sir Sword discovers that in order to attend a prestigious alumni dinner, he must complete three weeks he missed in grade three! He joins Rainbow's class but believes that because of his superior intelligence it is not necessary to pay attention, or arrive to class on time. In the end, with Rainbow as his tutor, Sir Sword passes the final test. Sir Sword then learns that even the smartest fish don't know everything in the sea. "Rainbeau de Bergerac" Every time Blue tries to speak with his crush, Goldie, he freezes up. Rainbow comes up with an elaborate plan involving Sea Filly's science experiment -a Clamitter that transmits signals from one fish to another. Blue recites everything that Rainbow's says and ends up making a fool of himself. Just when he thinks that Goldie will never speak to him again Sea Filly saves the day by telling Goldie everything. Turns out that Goldie likes Blue just the way his is -without all of the flowery poetry.

"The Golf Lesson" Despite being warned not to, Rainbow fools around with one of his Dad's golf clubs and winds up breaking it. Now he's got to replace the club before his father's big game with Sir Sword. Rainbow takes on a number of exhaustive jobs, running himself ragged until he finally makes enough to replace the golf club. But when Sol pulls the club out of his bag he's puzzled: It's in perfect shape. He was positive he broke that club a week ago. "Ruby's Adventures in Babysitting" Ruby has her first guppy sitting job, taking care of the next door neighbour's baby, Ferdie. When Rainbow offers to help, Ruby laughs, saying that Rainbow isn't responsible enough to guppy sit. Later, Ferdie turns out to be more than Ruby can handle and it's Rainbow to the rescue, helping Ruby to find the missing Ferdie and get him home before his parents return. Ruby learns that her little brother is more responsible than she gave him credit for.

Sherman rescues Rainbow and becomes the hero of the story. Rainbow and his friends learn that what makes a person different is what also makes them special. "Lost in Crumbling Canyon" Rainbow and the school bully, Chomper, get separated from the rest of their scout troop during a camping trip in dangerous "Crumbling Canyon". At first they just argue as usual. But as they try to find their way back to the troop and encounter many dangerous obstacles, they both realize that working together is the best way to overcome any difficult situation.

A terrified Rainbow does everything he can to hide his toothache from his parents but they eventually figure it out and make a dentist appointment for the next morning. When he arrives at the dentist he discovers that things aren't so scary. In fact the dentist is very nice and the procedure turns out to be quick and painless. "Rainbow Fish & the Pop Star" While listening to the snobby Barry Cuda bragging to the crowd at Wanda's, Rainbow makes up some tall tales of his own to impress his school mates. He tells everyone that he knows pop star Bruce Sturgeon and that he can get him to play at the school dance. Through hilarious schemes and antics Rainbow meets Bruce Sturgeon and gets him to play at the dance, but not before he is almost humiliated in front of the entire school. Rainbow learns that bragging is not cool.

When Rainbow doesn't tell his parents the truth he must go to elaborate lengths keep them from discovering his true mark. In the end the truth comes out and Rainbow learns that honesty really is the best policy. "Grandpa's Fish Tales" Rainbow's grandpa is coming for a visit and Rainbow moans about how boring it is going to be having to keep the old guy company. Wanda tells Rainbow that he'd be surprised how interesting old people can be. After Rainbow starts visiting with his grandpa, it turns out that the old guy has amazing stories to tell. Rainbow is never gonna think old people are boring again.

Thankfully, Wanda helps him to learn that with hard work and lots of practice you can do anything you put your mind to. Rainbow gives a wonderful performance, making everyone proud including himself. "Riptide" Rainbow, Sea Filly and Blue are going riptiding in the currents. Rainbow's dad Sol warns them all to wear their helmets and stay away from the Danger Pool. The three friends think that this is just another thing parents say to stop young fish from having fun. That is until Blue is swept away and Rainbow and Sea Filly encounter dangerous tides and scary sea creatures trying to rescue him. They all realize that parents make rules to keep them safe and that it is important to obey them.

"Rainbow Fish and the New Girl at School" It is the first day back at school after summer vacation. On the way to school Rainbow tells Blue how it is not fair to have a girl for a sister - girls are so weird. They swim into class in just enough time for Mrs. Chips to introduce a new kid in town - a female sea horse named Sea Filly. At first Rainbow is horrified to be assigned to do a science experiment with her. Sea Filly's sense of humor and offbeat take on things eventually wins him over and by the end of the story the three are officially a trio and both Rainbow and Blue have learned that girls are cool too! "Rainbow Fish Meets Wayne Grunion" The hockey superstar Wayne Grunion is coming to town and Blue is determined to do anything to meet him. He and Rainbow go to the hotel where Wayne is staying and sneak into his room, where they take a souvenir puck they find. Later they learn that Wayne refuses to play the big game because he can't find his lucky puck! Rainbow and Blue learn that it is important to respect other fishes' property and that stealing is wrong.
