About 2016 Rio Olympics

The 2016 Summer Olympics are set to begin on August 5 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and run until August 21. During those 16 days, more than 10,000 athletes from more than 200 countries will compete in 28 different sports, setting a new record for both the number of participating countries and the number of sports.

Rio has worked hard to get ready for the summer games, the first Olympics to be held in Latin America in nearly 50 years. The city has constructed nine new venues specifically for the games, and it is taking advantage of 18 existing facilities, including the 74,000-seat Maracana Stadium, which will host the games' opening and closing ceremonies.

Sports to be included in the games include old favorites gymnastics, track and field, and soccer, as well as two new sports approved by the International Olympic Committee in 2009. The first of the new sports, rugby sevens, is a seven-player version of rugby union. The other new sport, golf, was expected to draw the world's top competitors, but the four top-ranked players in the world - Justin Day, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlory and Jordan Spieth - announced just weeks before the games that they would not compete in Rio due to health and security concerns.

In the United States, the games will be broadcast on NBC, and some of the network's coverage will be broadcast in ultra high definition 4K video. Dozens of other broadcasters around the world, including the BBC in the UK, the CBC in Canada, Seven Network in Australia, and Sky Television in New Zealand, will provide local television coverage of the games using video provided by Olympic Broadcasting Services.
