Watch Roseanne

The sitcom Roseanne follows the trials and tribulations of the Connors, a blue collar family living in Lanford, Illinois. The show ran on ABC for nine years and was one of the most watched television shows in the nation. The title character is the mother played by comedian Roseanne Barr, struggling to raise her family on a limited means and approaching even the worst situations with a patented sarcastic humor. Her husband Dan Conner is played by John Goodman and her sister Jackie is played by Laurie Metcalf. The oldest Conner child Becky has been portrayed by both Lecy Goranson and Sarah Chalke. Sara Gilbert plays middle Darlene and Michael Fishman son D.J. with an infant son, Jerry, added in a later season and uncredited. Other notable regulars are Johnny Galecki as Darlene's husband David, Glenn Quinn as Becky's husband Mark, and Martin Mull as Roseanne's business partner and former enemy Leon.

Following Roseanne's life through several years the show follows she and Dan's career changes, their friendships, their fights, their disappointments and lucky breaks. The Conner children grow from children to adults, making decisions and becoming their own people in spite of what their parents want for them. The Conners are a real modern American family trying to cope with what exactly that means for their lives and livelihood.

The show has been lauded for being one of the first on television with a feminist perspective, having a strong female lead who does not rely on her appearance to get by and who can freely express herself. Unusually for the time both leads of the show are overweight but not subject to ridicule for it and both are parents working outside the home rather than the traditional view of the nuclear family unit. A wide array of controversial issues are covered on the show that had never been touched by television sitcoms before. It has garnered many awards and remains a favorite of fans, still replaying in off-network syndication.
