Pilot is the very first episode of Smash, an American musical show that premiered on February 6, 2012. The episode sets the stage for the rest of the season by introducing viewers to the world of Broadway theatre and the cutthroat competition that exists between actors vying for the same roles.

The episode opens with the introduction of the two main characters, Karen Cartwright (played by Katherine McPhee) and Ivy Lynn (played by Megan Hilty). Karen is a struggling performer from Iowa who has been chasing her Broadway dream for years. Ivy is a seasoned ensemble member who has been in the business for years. Both women are auditioning for the lead role of Marilyn Monroe in a new Broadway musical called Bombshell, produced by Eileen Rand (played by Anjelica Huston) and written by Julia Houston (played by Debra Messing).

The initial scenes of the show take place during a casting call for Bombshell, where Karen and Ivy are seen singing their hearts out for the role of a lifetime. While Ivy is polished and professional, Karen's raw talent is evident from the moment she starts singing. Despite the producers initially giving Ivy the role of Marilyn Monroe, they decide to call back Karen for another audition.

Meanwhile, Julia is struggling to come up with a concept for the musical. She's been working on the production for years but is unable to find the right inspiration to bring the story of Marilyn Monroe to life. In comes Tom (played by Christian Borle), Julia's writing partner and best friend who has been through thick and thin with her over the years. Together, they brainstorm ideas, but nothing seems to click.

Despite their difficulties, the show must go on, and rehearsals begin. Karen and Ivy both make it through to the next round of auditions, and the tension between them begins to mount. As Eileen and Julia work to bring their vision to life, they encounter a challenge in the form of the show's potential financial backers.

The episode ends with Karen and Ivy both giving their all during their final audition for the role of Marilyn Monroe. While Ivy is confident in her abilities, Karen's performance leaves a lasting impact on everyone in the room.

In conclusion, Pilot is an exhilarating introduction to Smash's world and characters. The episode does an excellent job of capturing the excitement and intensity of the Broadway scene and sets the tone for the rest of the season. With its catchy musical numbers, captivating storylines, and great performances by the cast, Smash is a show that's bound to leave viewers wanting more.
