In the second episode of South Park's first season, titled "Volcano," the small mountain town experiences a panic when geologists warn that an erupting volcano in the nearby mountains will cause a huge lava flow that will destroy everything in its path.
All of the townspeople are afraid, and the school children are sent home early. Stan and Kyle decide to take advantage of the situation and play hooky from school to search for pirate treasure, which they believe is buried on a nearby hill.
Meanwhile, the other children are working on a presentation about volcano safety, but they struggle to make it interesting. In the end, they find a way to make the presentation exciting by creating a musical number about volcano safety that incorporates their own fears and concerns.
As the lava flow gets closer to town, the residents scramble to evacuate. However, the volcano turns out to be a false alarm, and the lava is actually just a flow of hot fudge from a damaged candy factory. The townspeople are relieved, but still annoyed at the expense and disruption caused by the false alarm.
Overall, "Volcano" is a satirical take on the way that people react to perceived threats and the way that government agencies and businesses often exploit these reactions for their own benefit. The episode is also notable for its catchy songs and irreverent humor, which would become signature elements of the South Park series.
