SpongeBob SquarePants is an animated comedy television series created by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg for Nickelodeon. The series chronicles the adventures and endeavors of an eccentric sea sponge named SpongeBob SquarePants and his aquatic friends in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. Though initially conceived for an adult audience, Hillenburg's vision for SpongeBob was to create a series that would appeal to kids and adults alike, with humor that was equally smart, absurd and physical.

Centered on the title character and his friends Patrick Star, Squidward Tentacles, Mr. Krabs, Sandy Cheeks and Plankton, SpongeBob SquarePants follows the day-to-day life of SpongeBob as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab fast food restaurant, where he flipper-flips Krabby Patties while having adventures with his best friend Patrick. SpongeBob's perseverance and positivity usually lead him and his friends to find fun, adventure and joy in their everyday lives in the underwater city. Squidward is SpongeBob's grumpy, sarcastic neighbor and co-worker at the Krusty Krab, while Mr. Krabs is SpongeBob's greedy boss who runs the restaurant. Sandy Cheeks is a squirrel from Texas who wears a special diving suit to live underwater, and Plankton is a small green copepod who owns a rival restaurant called the Chum Bucket across the street from the Krusty Krab.

SpongeBob SquarePants is noted for its absurdist style of humor, nautical theme and well-developed characters. The award-winning show has appeal for viewers of all ages with its over-the-top humor, lovable characters, vivid and colorful animation and unique settings. The series and its characters have become an iconic part of pop culture and spawned several theatrical films, video games, merchandise and a Tony award-winning Broadway musical. Though aimed at children, SpongeBob SquarePants has developed a cult following among teens and adults as well. The show has earned outstanding critical acclaim, high ratings and global popularity over its decades long run. With its offbeat, good-natured stories and characters, SpongeBob SquarePants proves that optimism and living life to the fullest can turn any ordinary day into an extraordinary adventure.
