St. Elsewhere was a critically acclaimed medical drama that aired on FOX from 1982 to 1988. The show was set in the fictional St. Eligius Hospital in South Boston, and it followed the lives and careers of the doctors, nurse, and staff who worked there. The show was renowned for its gritty realism and frank exploration of social issues such as poverty, substance abuse, and mental illness.

David Birney starred as Dr. Ben Samuels, a gifted surgeon who struggled with personal demons and a tumultuous marriage. Christina Pickles portrayed his on-again, off-again love interest, Dr. Joanne Gideon, the hospital's chief of pathology. Bruce Greenwood played Dr. Seth Griffin, a highly skilled trauma surgeon who struggled with addiction. Cynthia Sikes played Dr. Annie Cavanero, a resident who faced discrimination because of her Italian heritage.

France Nuyen played guest star Dr. Paulette Kiem, a brilliant physician who struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts. William Daniels played Dr. Mark Craig, the hospital's ambitious chief of surgery who was frequently at odds with his colleagues. Stephen Furst played guest star Dr. Elliot Axelrod, an overweight and insecure resident who struggled to assert himself. Ed Begley Jr. played Dr. Victor Ehrlich, a sensitive and earnest resident who often served as the voice of reason.

Bonnie Bartlett played Dr. Ellen Craig, Mark's long-suffering wife who grappled with her own personal issues. Doris Roberts played guest star Theresa Falco, a patient who became close to Luther Hawkins. Terence Knox played guest star Bryan Chandler, an HIV-positive patient who faced discrimination and stigma. Ed Flanders played Dr. Donald Westphall, the hospital's compassionate and dedicated chief of medicine who served as the show's moral center. And Denzel Washington played Dr. Philip Chandler, a talented surgeon who faced racism and other obstacles in his career.

St. Elsewhere was a groundbreaking show that tackled difficult subject matter with sensitivity and realism. It was known for its unflinching portrayal of medical procedures, as well as its exploration of complex social and ethical issues. The show was a critical and commercial success, winning numerous awards and legions of devoted fans.
