Ep 3. Game 3: Canucks vs. Bruins

  • June 6, 2011

In Game 3 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals, the Vancouver Canucks faced off against the Boston Bruins in what would prove to be a pivotal game in the series. With the series tied at one game apiece, both teams were looking to gain an advantage in what had already been a hard-fought battle. The game took place at TD Garden in Boston, where the Bruins were looking to take advantage of their home ice.

The first period of Game 3 was marked by a physical and intense style of play, with both teams looking to set the tone early. The Canucks had several good scoring chances early on, but Bruins goalie Tim Thomas was up to the challenge and turned away everything that came his way. The Bruins, meanwhile, struggled to generate much offense in the first period, with the Canucks doing a good job of clogging up the neutral zone and limiting their time and space.

In the second period, the Canucks started to take control of the game, and it looked like they might finally break through and score the game's first goal. But just when it seemed like the Canucks were going to take control of the game, the Bruins struck back. Brad Marchand scored on a breakaway to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead and send the home crowd into a frenzy. The Canucks continued to press, but once again, Tim Thomas was up to the challenge, making several key saves to preserve the Bruins' lead.

The third period saw the Canucks continue to push for the tying goal, but the Bruins' defense and goaltending remained stubborn. With less than six minutes remaining in regulation, the Canucks finally managed to break through, as Maxim Lapierre pounced on a rebound to tie the game at 1-1. From there, both teams continued to battle hard, but neither was able to score the game-winning goal before the end of regulation.

The game went to overtime, with both teams knowing that the next goal could be the difference between winning and losing the game. The Canucks had several good scoring chances in the extra period, but once again, Tim Thomas was unbeatable. Finally, with just over six minutes remaining in overtime, the Bruins broke through. Nathan Horton scored the game-winning goal off a perfect feed from David Krejci to give the Bruins a 2-1 win and a 2-1 series lead.

Overall, Game 3 was a hard-fought battle between two teams that were evenly matched. The Canucks dominated early on and had several good scoring chances, but the Bruins weathered the storm and struck back when it mattered most. Tim Thomas was the standout performer for the Bruins, making 40 saves and keeping his team in the game when it looked like the Canucks might take control. Nathan Horton's overtime winner was the icing on the cake for the Bruins, who were able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and take a 2-1 series lead.
