Stars Earn Stripes is produced by Mark Burnett, producer of Survivor, Celebrity Apprentice, and many other reality and game shows. It is a reality show that gives celebrities a chance to experience military style action first hand. Each celebrity is paired with a member of the military or law enforcement agency. After a training period with their partners the celebrities undergo a challenging mission. Two celebrities and two professionals would be combined to form teams for the missions. The celebrity team members completing the mission in the slowest time face elimination. Each episode cash was awarded to charities chosen by the celebrities. A large reward also goes to the charity of the final winner. Keeping with the theme of the show, the charities assist members of the military or their families.

Alongside their professional partner, each celebrity is given a chance to train with a weapon that is going to be used on the following mission. Combat techniques and methods such as repelling are also practiced. These weapons and methods are then used on a mission that simulates combat. Mission goals must be completed by both professionals and celebrities. The mission goals include shooting specific targets and driving vehicles to designated points. On each mission the celebrities must wade the same mud, repel down the same walls, and jump into the same lakes as the professionals. During interviews after the missions, many celebrities admitted to a new respect for members of the American military.

A degree of controversy surrounded the debut and first season of Stars Earn Stripes. A petition calling for cancellation of the show was formed because the petitioners, including retired members of the military, felt the show glorified combat inappropriately. There was also some questions raised regarding the firing of Jack Osbourne, son of Sharon Osbourne, days before the show was due to start filming.
