Tessa and Ryan return home after going on a romantic vacation only to discover that George has implemented an "open door policy" while they were gone. George's idea is to make the house more hospitable to his neighbors by removing the front door and replacing it with a bright pink curtain to invite people to stop by. Tessa is immediately uncomfortable with this new idea, but George is convinced that it will create a sense of community.

As the day goes on, Tessa is proven right as more and more of their neighbors take advantage of the open door policy. The house is filled with an endless stream of visitors who interrupt Tessa and Ryan's post-vacation bliss. Tessa tries to make the best of it, but is constantly thwarted by her father's enthusiastic embrace of the new policy.

Meanwhile, Lisa is trying to get her driver's license and enlists Malik's help to teach her how to drive. It quickly becomes clear that Malik is a terrible driving instructor, but Lisa is too afraid to fire him. Eventually, Lisa realizes that she needs to take control of her own learning and tell Malik the truth about her abilities.

At the same time, Sheila Shay is determined to get on the neighborhood board and prove to everyone that she is capable of being a leader. She stages a series of ridiculous stunts in order to get attention, but her behavior quickly becomes too much for even her own husband to bear.

As the day goes on and more and more visitors take advantage of the open door policy, Tessa and Ryan become increasingly frustrated. But just as they're about to give up, they have a breakthrough. They decide that they can use the open door policy to their advantage by throwing a party and using it as an opportunity to get to know their neighbors on their own terms.

The party is a huge success, and Tessa and Ryan are finally able to take control of their own home again. They may not be ready for an open door policy, but they're more than capable of throwing a great party.

In the end, George realizes that there are better ways to create a sense of community than by removing his front door. He apologizes to Tessa and Ryan and they all agree that they're better off with a little bit of privacy. And Lisa, now in control of her own learning, passes her driving test with flying colors - much to Malik's surprise.
