In the series premiere of Sunday Without God, we are introduced to a world where God has abandoned his creations, leaving the world without death. This has led to a stagnant existence for the living and a population of immortal undead.

The episode opens with an introduction to our protagonist, a young girl named Ai Astin, who is tasked with laying the dead to rest in this world where no one can truly die. She approaches her task with stoic determination, though it is clear that she is burdened by the weight of it.

Ai is soon approached by a man named Hampnie Hambart, who claims to be her long-lost father. Despite Ai's initial resistance, Hampnie proves himself to be a capable warrior and ally as they traverse the barren land known as the Valley of Death. Along the way, the two encounter various undead creatures, including a young girl who seems to harbor a particular hatred for Ai.

As they reach the center of the valley, Hampnie and Ai come across a mysterious structure called the Gravekeeper's Palace. Inside, they meet a young girl named Scar, who claims to be the Gravekeeper and holds the key to the true nature of their world. Scar explains that, in this world without God, even those who have been killed are unable to die. Instead, they are turned into undead, wandering aimlessly until a Gravekeeper lays them to rest.

As their conversation continues, Hampnie suddenly takes Scar hostage and threatens to kill her unless she reveals the location of a certain person. The revelation of the identity and importance of this person sets the stage for the remainder of the season, as Ai and Hampnie journey to new locations and encounter new challenges in their quest to uncover the truth about this world and its inhabitants.

Overall, the pilot episode of Sunday Without God sets a tone of melancholy and bleakness, punctuated by moments of action and suspense. The world-building is detailed and intriguing, leaving the audience eager to learn more about the mechanics of this world without death and the fates of its inhabitants. The characterizations of Ai and Hampnie are compelling and layered, and their relationship promises to be a driving force throughout the rest of the season.
