Rob Petrie, a comedy writer, faces a dilemma in season 2 episode 2 of The Dick Van Dyke Show titled "The Two Faces of Rob." Rob's boss, Alan Brady, asks him to write a sketch about a famous singer named Prince Penney. Rob immediately accepts the assignment, but he soon learns that Prince Penney is a personal friend of his wife, Laura. She loves the man and has never spoken a bad word about him, and Rob feels conflicted. On the one hand, he must deliver a sketch to his boss. On the other hand, he doesn't want to embarrass his wife's friend by making him the butt of a joke.

The episode begins with Rob sitting in front of his typewriter, trying to come up with a hilarious sketch about Prince Penney. His wife, Laura, enters the room and sees how tense he is. Rob tells her about the assignment and admits that he's uncomfortable making Prince Penney the target of his jokes. Laura agrees with him and reveals that Prince Penney is a sweet, sensitive man who doesn't deserve to be ridiculed in front of millions of people. Laura begs Rob to come up with a different sketch, but he knows that he can't disobey his boss.

Rob decides to talk to Prince Penney in person and see if he's okay with being the subject of a sketch. He meets the famous singer at a diner and is relieved to see that he's a friendly, down-to-earth guy. Prince Penney tells Rob that he's happy to be in the spotlight and doesn't mind being the target of jokes as long as they're not too cruel or personal. Rob is relieved and goes home to tell Laura about his conversation with Prince Penney. Laura is happy to hear that her friend is okay with the sketch, and Rob goes back to work with a clear conscience.

Rob writes a sketch that pokes fun at Prince Penney but doesn't insult his character or his talents. The sketch is well-received by Alan Brady, and the cast rehearses it for the show. However, things take an unexpected turn when Prince Penney visits the set to watch the taping. He sees the sketch and is deeply hurt by it. He feels like the jokes were too mean-spirited and that he was humiliated in front of his fans. Prince Penney storms out of the studio, and Rob feels terrible about his role in the debacle.

The episode ends with Rob and Laura discussing the fallout from the sketch. Rob is devastated that he hurt someone who he admires and respects, and Laura comforts him by reminding him that he was just doing his job. She tells him that he's a good man and that Prince Penney will eventually forgive him. Rob is still unsure if he did the right thing, but he knows that he learned an important lesson about the importance of empathy and compassion. The episode ends with Rob vowing to never let his career get in the way of his humanity.
