The Great Food Truck Race is a food show where different groups compete to see which one makes the most money. The show starts off with many different groups. Each week the group with the lowest amount of sales is eliminated from the competition. The Food Truck Race has some great prizes. The winning team got fifty thousand dollars and their own custom made food truck that they used during the competition.

The teams are made up of three people who dream of operating their own food truck business. Some of the teams have a trained chef but others teams learned from cooking at home. They come from all over the country. The teams all cook different styles of food from Italian to Korean barbeque, there are even some waffle makers. Each week the teams are given a food challenge to make a dish requiring specific ingredients or rules. The team that wins this gets an advantage. This usually includes more money to purchase cooking supplies or a head start in front of the other teams.

In each episode the teams travel to a different city. They have to buy their food and find a location to set up their trucks. The teams are then allowed to sell their food until the contest is over for that time period. At least once during the selling time there will be a speed bump challenge. This is where an extra obstacle is added. Past speed bumps have included everything on the menu must sell for a dollar, and that one member of the team has to sit out. Once the selling is over all the money and receipts are turned in and calculated. The team that has made the most money gets to move onto the next round. This usually means they get some kind of advantage to start the next challenge as well. The team with the lowest is done in the competition.
