Doug and Carrie are seemingly living the American dream - they have a comfortable home, steady jobs and a healthy relationship. However, their idyllic life is threatened in "The King of Queens" season 2 episode 8, titled "Dire Strayts."

The episode begins with Doug receiving a notice that his union is going on strike. Initially, he is ecstatic at the prospect of having time off to relax. However, as the days without work drag on, his financial worries begin to mount. Carrie tries to assuage Doug's concerns by reminding him that they have a savings account, but Doug is still concerned with how they will pay their bills without income.

Meanwhile, Arthur, Carrie's eccentric father, has taken up bird watching as a hobby. The hobby quickly spirals out of control, as he begins to spend all his time and money on bird-watching equipment. Carrie is frustrated with her father's new obsession and confronts him about his overspending. Arthur, however, is unapologetic and insists that his new hobby is worth the expense.

As the strike continues, Doug's frustration grows. He begins spending his days bickering with his neighbors over minor annoyances and watching TV. Carrie pushes Doug to find a productive way to spend his time, but Doug is resistant. One day, he sees a stray dog wandering around the neighborhood and decides to take him in. Carrie is immediately opposed to the idea, as they already have a dog and a cat, but Doug insists that they can't leave the dog out on the streets.

The newly acquired dog quickly becomes a source of tension between Doug and Carrie. While Doug is enamored with the new pet, Carrie is frustrated with the added responsibility and expense. She reminds Doug that they can barely afford to take care of their other animals, let alone a new one. Doug is unwilling to part with the dog and the two enter into a heated argument.

In the midst of this tension, Arthur convinces the couple to attend a bird-watching party with him. Carrie initially declines, but Doug is intrigued by the idea of trying something new. As they mix and mingle with the other bird enthusiasts, Doug and Carrie begin to bicker once again. The tension reaches a boiling point when the new dog runs off into the woods.

The group bands together to search for the missing pet, but as the night wears on, it becomes apparent that the dog is nowhere to be found. Doug is devastated and Carrie is frustrated with the whole situation. They both blame each other for the loss of the dog and are unable to communicate effectively.

Eventually, the strike ends and Doug returns to work. With his income restored, the couple is able to move past their financial concerns and focus on their relationship. They come to a resolution about the dog and find a way to make the best of the situation. Arthur continues to obsess over bird watching, but Carrie is at least partially appeased by his decision to donate his old bird-watching equipment to a local school.

In the end, "Dire Strayts" is a heartwarming episode that focuses on the importance of communication and compromise in a relationship. The episode is interwoven with amusing subplots and relatable struggles, making it a standout in "The King of Queens" series.
