Ep 3. Melbourne

In Season 1 Episode 3 of The Pacific entitled "Melbourne," the Marines of the 1st Division are welcomed ashore in Melbourne, Australia, where they are greeted by a cheering crowd of civilians. The soldiers are given two weeks of "R&R" or rest and relaxation. As the Marines explore the city, they are surprised by the kindness and hospitality of the locals, who go out of their way to make them feel welcome.

For many of the Marines, this is their first time experiencing life outside of combat. They enjoy the freedom and easygoing lifestyle of the city, visiting bars, attending dances, and meeting new people. However, despite the carefree atmosphere, the soldiers cannot help but think about the ongoing war and their inevitable return to battle.

Meanwhile, Corporal "Chuck" Tatum (played by Liam Hemsworth) meets a young Australian woman named Stella (Claire van der Boom) and falls in love with her. However, their romance is cut short when Chuck is ordered to return to the front lines.

Back on the battlefield, the Marines face intense fighting as they advance through the thick jungle of Peleliu. They struggle with exhaustion, disease, and the constant threat of Japanese snipers. Despite their bravery and determination, many soldiers are killed or injured in the grueling battle.

As "Melbourne" comes to a close, the Marines return to Australia once again for a brief respite before they are sent to their next mission in the Pacific. The soldiers are reminded of the fleeting nature of their rest and relaxation, and the harsh reality of war looms ever-present in their minds.
