In The Place Promised In Our Early Days, directed by Makoto Shinkai, two childhood friends, Hiroki and Takuya, dream of flying a plane they built together to reach the mysterious tower that can be seen in the distance. The story takes place in an alternate universe, where Japan is separated into two countries by a wall, with the North under Soviet control and the South under American control.
Hiroki and Takuya go to school in the South and live in a rural town near the coast. During this time, they meet Sayuri, a mute girl who regularly visits the abandoned watchtower in search of a mysterious object. As the trio progresses through school, their relationship deepens, but eventually, Takuya leaves to attend a prestigious high school in the North.
Despite being in a different part of the country, the two friends try to stay in touch, and Takuya sends Hiroki video messages updating him on his latest academic achievements. However, one day, the messages suddenly stop, and Hiroki becomes increasingly worried about his friend's well-being.
After a few years, Hiroki is in college studying physics when he stumbles upon a massive secret project being conducted by the North. The project, which involves using a tower similar to the one in their childhood dreams, has something to do with the messages Takuya sent him years ago. Fueled by his curiosity and desire to see his friend again, Hiroki sets off to uncover the truth.
The Place Promised In Our Early Days explores themes such as love, friendship, dreams, and the consequences of ambition. The plot is intriguing and keeps the audience engaged throughout the story, as it delves into the complicated nature of relationships and the cost of pursuing one's ambition. The animation is also breathtaking, with stunningly detailed backgrounds and fluid, beautiful movements.
The character development is excellent as well, with each individual going through their own journey of self-discovery and growth. Hiroki, the protagonist, is initially shy and reserved, but as the story progresses, he becomes more assertive and determined in his quest to uncover the truth behind the project. Takuya, on the other hand, is driven by his ambition and desire to succeed, which eventually leads to his downfall.
Sayuri, the unspoken third member of the trio, is also an intriguing character, with her own motivations and desires that become clearer as the story unfolds. Despite not being able to speak, she manages to effectively communicate her emotions and connect with the audience.
Overall, The Place Promised In Our Early Days is a fantastic anime film that showcases the power of love, friendship, and perseverance. The story is well-written, the animation is breathtaking, and the characters are engaging and relatable. It's a must-watch for anyone who enjoys sci-fi, romance, or coming-of-age stories.
