  • March 15, 2010

In the first episode of "The Price of Beauty" titled "Pilot/Thailand," pop star Jessica Simpson embarks on a journey to explore the cultural differences in beauty standards around the world. Simpson travels to Thailand with her two best friends, celebrity hairstylist Ken Paves and personal assistant Cacee Cobb, to discover what beauty means to the people of Thailand.

The episode begins with Simpson explaining her motivation behind the show. She has always been criticized for her looks by the media and felt the pressure to conform to traditional beauty standards. She wants to explore different cultures and redefine what beauty means to her.

Upon arriving in Thailand, Simpson quickly realizes that their perception of beauty is vastly different from what she's used to in the United States. The first stop on her trip is at a beauty pageant where she meets several contestants who are vying for the title of "Miss Tiffany's Universe." Tiffany's Universe is a beauty pageant for transgender women, a concept that is still struggling to gain acceptance in many parts of the world.

Simpson and her friends are impressed by the pageant contestants' confidence and poise despite the discrimination they face. They learn how important it is to have a platform to express oneself and to fight for acceptance.

They then visit a local market in Bangkok where Simpson tries out a traditional Thai beautification ritual - the creation of turmeric and tamarind paste. During the process, she learns about the importance of natural beauty treatments in Thai culture, and how different ingredients can affect skin and hair health.

The trio also visits a rural village where they learn about the traditional tattooing method, Yantra tattoos. They meet a monk who practices this ancient art form, and Simpson decides to get a Yantra tattoo herself.

While getting a tattoo, Simpson has a conversation with the monk about the perception of beauty. He explains that beauty is not just about the physical appearance, but also about what's inside a person. Simpson takes the conversation to heart and begins to realize that beauty comes in different forms.

The final stop on the Thailand trip is to an elephant sanctuary where Simpson and her friends learn about the role of elephants in Thai culture. They also discover how women work alongside these magnificent creatures to create beautiful silk fabrics from the elephant's waste. Simpson realizes that beauty can come from the most unexpected places.

Throughout the episode, Simpson learns about different beauty standards and how they affect people's lives. She realizes it's essential to celebrate diversity and redefine traditional beauty standards, so everyone can feel beautiful in their own unique way.

Overall, the first episode of "The Price of Beauty" takes viewers on a cultural journey of discovery and encourages them to think differently about beauty. It sets the tone for the rest of the series, as Simpson and her friends continue to explore beauty standards around the world.
