Josephine identifies this as referring to the painting of a very beautiful girl, but all she knows is that this is the Portrait of Brenda.The telephone rings. A film producer's daughter disappears. An unusual form of ransom note arrives. But has she really been kidnapped?Ben Kersh (KENNETH J. WARREN) is an American movie tycoon who, somewhere along the line of his many marriages, has become the father of a daughter, Jenny (JUDEE MORTON), now a highly attractive if wayward young lady with a mind of her own and a special place in Ben Kersh's affections.His reactions are predictable when Jenny is kidnapped: he's worried out of his life, but canny enough to realise that the ransom demand may not necessarily mean the return of his daughter when the money is handed over. That's why he appeals to Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE), for help.The ransom note takes an unusual form. It's a short film showing Jenny being held prisoner and pleading for her father to pay over the ransom money.The film has arrived with the "rushes" of film shot on location in Nice, and though all members of the unit deny any knowledge of it, the Saint can't help feeling that someone from the studios must be implicated.The kidnappers' instructions are followed, with the Saint as the go-between who goes to the Nice hotel with the ransom money. Once there, he receives further instructions to go to a deserted airfield at a fixed time. The Saint takes his own precautions, among them a skilfully-designed wristwatch gadget provided by the film's special effects expert, Frank Lomax (JOHN SAVIDENT), which is in fact a miniature camera.He foils an attempt to hi-jack the money on his way to the airfield and arrives there to find two men waiting for him. One is a young man named Jean Latour (S,4NDOR ELES); the other, a tough German (DEREK NEWARK). Their demand for the money is met with the Saint's insistence that he should first be taken to Jenny. The Saint investigates a racket in which illegal immigrants are smuggled into Britain.A fishing expedition produces an unusual haul for Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE), when his boat is almost run down in thick fog and he hears a shot, abody being thrown overboard, and drags a murder victim out of the water.He has sailed into a grim smuggling racket - the illegal importing of immigrants into Britain. The men responsible are Bonner (NEIL HALLETT) and Slater (GARY MILLER).In the local Yacht Club, the Saint drifts into conversation with an attractive girl named Laura (SUSAN TRAVERS), who is waiting for Bonner.When Bonner arrives, he apologises for having to leave Laura to her own devices because of an urgent message, and she accepts the Saint's invitation to drive her up to London.Meanwhile, Bonner is forced to take his latest cargo to London himself because Slater has had trouble with the police and has lost one or two of the Pakistaniimmigrants. As this is happening, the Saint is questioning Laura about her man-friend, and he learns that Bonner is a boat-broker who hasn't sold a boat in months - but still seems to be making money.But Banner is also facing financial problems because he is being blackmailed by Slater. The Saint, more than ever convinced that Bonner has something to do with the shooting he has overheard, follows a trail which leads him to the clearing-house used by Bonner, where he finds a very ill Pakistani named Chaudri (NIK ZARAN), who rejects the Saint's offer to take him to a doctor. Before the Saint can take further action, Chaudri is shot, and when the Saint escapes and returns with a doctor it is discovered (I-) that the Pakistani had smallpox. Four directors of a big business combine die from apparent heart attacks. A coincidence or fiendishly clever murders? The Saint takes a hand when a fifth director meets his death.In an era in which take-over bids result in increasingly large combines, some people are bound to suffer. But there is nothing suspicious, at first, about the deaths of four directors of the mighty Combined Holdings - untilthe Saint, Simon Templar (ROGER MOORE), receives a request to visit his old friend Sir John Mulliner JOHN BOXER). Simon doesn't notice a blind man, with a white cane, shuffling along the pavement. The reason for Mulliner's request is made clear when he asks the Saint to accompany him to a meeting of the other directors. It is a postcard showing the blindfolded figure of Justice, holding the scales, with just one word: "You." Mulliner has no sooner passed it over than he falls forward - dead.The Saint keeps the appointment with the other directors at the luxurious penthouse home of Gilbert Kirby (ANDREW KEIR) and in doing so meets Kirby's daughter Anne (JEAN MARSH) and the other directors, John Ramsey (RONALD LEIGH-HUNT), Carl Howard (GEOFFREY CHATER), Neal Lammerton (JOHN BARRON) and Elliott Stratton (MARK BURNS).They are shocked at his news, but vote against allowing the Saint to investigate the series of what appear to be natural deaths which now total five, the first of which was of Elliott Stratton's father, who collapsed at a board meeting soon after his firm had been taken over. The Saint volunteers to help a girl find her missing brother - and plunges into a fantastic dope-smuggling drama.Tony Lane (PAUL GREENHALGH) has disappeared, and its because of his friendship with Tony's sister Jean (LYN ASHLEY) that Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE), volunteers to help her in her search for him.The search takes them to a club in Soho and brings the Saint face-to-face once again with the club's owner, Cord Thrandel (JOHN TURNER), a very tough gent, Cord, as the Saint knows well: he served two tours in Vietnam with conspicuous bravery, was then court-martialled for smuggling, and there's not much he hasn't done since.Cord suspects what is happening right away, and both the Saint and Jean are tricked and locked in a cell beneath the club. They succeed, however, in getting away and, in doing so, learn where Tony is living. And they reach him just in time. Cord has left him in a gas-filled room which will give the impression that he has committed suicide.The youngster has been stricken with conscience. Cord has a hold on him and has been blackmailing him into helping in the distribution of heroin, smuggled into the country by the Chinese. Tony's efforts to break away from Cord have nearly proved fatal for him, but now the situation is even more hazardous because of the risk that he will tell the police what he knows. Cord, masquerading as a doctor, makes another attempt on his life when Tony is in hospital. This attempt also fails.But Cord hasn't given up yet, and both the Saint and Jean are the objects of his attentions. Cord is also worried because the Chinese agent, Mr. Ching (BURT KWOUK), has arrived in England to supervise the collection of the next consignment. Mr. Ching is quite open about his aims: he belongs to a Chinese organisation which intends to undermine Britain and America by increasing the number of drug addicts to a fantastic degree. 8. The Time To Die

A would-be killer plays a cat-and-mouse game with the Saint. But who is the mysterious avenger?The world is undoubtedly full of ungodly ones who have found, to their cost, that the Saint, Simon Templar (ROGER MOORE), will not hesitate to bring them to justice. There is, therefore, a large field of possible avengers on which to draw when trying to guess who might be responsible for the death threats he is now receiving.The first warning comes in a box which he finds in his car when accompanied by the glamorous American journalist Mary Ellen Brent (SUZANNE LLOYD), who is writing a feature on the Saint. The box contains a snake - harmless in itself, but accompanied by a note: "This is just the beginning... I have more surprises for you and the final one -the best of all - will be the death of the famous Simon Templar." Needless to says, it is unsigned. Any suggestion that it is a hoax is soon dismissed when the Saint has a narrow escape from being run down by a car, and then a mysterious telephone call from a man who says: "I want to come to your funeral, Mr. Templar. I want you dead...."This is followed by an attempt to give the Saint an electric shock, but the man tampering with a lamp in his apartment is caught in the act when Simon returns unexpectedly and recognises him as a small'time muscle-man named Charlie Mason (TERENCE RIGBY). Charlie says he has been given a hundred pounds to do the job, but doesn't know who by. He promises Simon that he will let him know if he hears anything more and keeps his word when he telephones Simon to give him an address. Simon goes to the address -and finds Charlie Mason dead. He has paid for his double-cross on both the Saint and the mystery man - but has helped Simon in an unexpected way because his girl-friend Laura Carlton (LINDA MARLOWE) comes up with some information. This is the problem facing The Saint when a business tycoon claims that he is being impersonated by a perfect double who is trying to ruin him.Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE), is cleverly abducted when changing 'planes at Athens, and the girl responsible is the attractive Annabel (DENISE BUCKLEY). She takes him to her employer, the wealthy magnate Eugene Patroclos (GREGOIRE ASLAN), who explains that he needs Simon's help. He is being impersonated by a perfect double, a man who is duplicating him in every way. Patroclos has apartments, houses and offices allover the world, and his double uses them, carries out deals under his name, and is threatening his future by putting through illegal deals - arms to the Congo, hard drugs and other such activities. Now, to make matters worse, he has stolen Patroclos' codebook which contains details of his entire business empire and the code he uses to communicate with his companies.The Saint decides to investigate, and discovers from a newspaperman friend that it is believed that the Patroclos ships have been carrying dodgy cargoes recently. He also finds some interesting newspaper cuttings which seem to indicate that Patroclos has, in fact, been in two places at the same time. He goes to the tycoon's London home and the girl who greets him could easily he Annabel. But is it? She doesn't seem to recognise him, and the Saint mentally dubs her Aunabel II (KATE O'MARA).She takes him to Patroclos (GREGOIRE ASLAN) and this Patroclos welcomes the Saint with pleasure, convinced that he is offering his, services to investigate the man who is impersonating him. The Saint is trained as a mercenary - but what is the real function of this private army which uses a health farm as a facade?It is, to all intents and purposes, a perfectly innocent and very exclusive health farm. He has disappeared after stealing three-quarters of a million dollars in American aid to the emerging African country to which he was a diplomat. Yet he loved that country. The Saint seeks aid from Jason's daughter Sara (SUZAN FARMER), who runs a boutique in London, and she promises to make a list of the contacts who might be shielding him. The one clue is that Jason is probably in Switzerland.The Saint's visit to Sara leads her into the hands of two men, Walter Faber (ROBERT HARDY) and Eddie Margoles (DAVID CARGILL), who are after the money. The Saint plays his part in a gangster's astute plot to trick his four greatest enemies into carrying out a gold robbery for him.Ed Brown (REGINALD MARSH) is a man with a sense of humour - a retired big-time gangster who has discovered how to enjoy life until his Rolls goes up in a bomb explosion. And it is the Saint, Simon Templar (ROGER MOORE), who finds the wrecked car and is asked to fly to Switzerland to break the news to Ed's finishing- school daughter Penny (STEPHANIE BEACHAM). She takes the news calmly: her father, she explains, was almost a stranger to her.Ed's will is a remarkable one and accompanied by a home-made cine film which is shown to his daughter, his friend Charlie (ALAN MacNAUGHTAN), a crooked lawyer, and four of his rival gangsters - Tony (T.P. McKENNA), Pietro (EDWARD BRAYSHAW), Dickie (BRIAN COBURN) and Mark (BRUCE BOA).Ed's figure on the screen tells them that he has a million pounds deposited in Switzerland, and the sum will go to whoever can match this amount. Its a rich reward none is likely to ignore - but a challenge to murder. The Saint realises right away that the gangsters will soon be at each other's throats, It is also significant that a million pounds' worth of gold is being shipped from Southampton to London in a week's time, and it looks as though Ed was planning another job.
