Watch The Taste

The Taste is a television show centered around cooking competitions. It is an original, interesting concept for a cooking show. The basic premise is that four professional chefs will judge contestants solely on one bite, or taste, of their food. Each chef will pick four cooks as part of their team. The teams will fix one dish each week to be tasted by the chefs. The twist is that the chefs have no idea which team is presenting which dish, so they may actually be eliminating a member of their own team when they vote no on a dish. The winning contestant will receive $100,000 and a Prius. The chef with the winning team wins bragging rights.

The professional chefs on the show come from all branches of the food industry. Anthony Bourdain, a restaurateur and traveling food critic; Nigella Lawson, star of several of her own cooking shows; Brian Malarkey, a former reality cooking show contestant; and Ludo Lefebvre, a chef, author, and also a former reality cooking show contestant.

The contestants come from all walks of life and are a mix of professional and home cooks. The show provides some back story for each of them, and goes more in-depth on who they are once they are confirmed as a member of a team.

The food itself is presented in a very pleasing manner. It ranges from the simple, such as shrimp and grits, to haute cuisine, such as bibimbap with a quail egg. The cooks use Chinese spoons to serve the food, just a morsel of everything with a bit of sauce. The flavors must be distinct enough for the chefs to identify each ingredient, but the whole must blend together as well. Many of the team contestants actually manage to leave a favorable impression on the judges.

At the heart of it, this is a reality show as well, so viewers are given a peak into the mini-dramas being acted out in the kitchen. There are fits of temper, bouts of tears, constant displays of ego and, for some, it is all about the competition.

The Taste is an ABC television production which debuted on January 22, 2013. The show runs weekly with a running time of 42 minutes per episode.
