Martin Sloan, an ad executive from New York, stops at a gas station while on a business trip and realizes that he is in his hometown of Homewood. Feeling lost and inspired by memories of his childhood, he decides to take a walk to his old neighborhood. As he slowly makes his way through Homewood, Sloan experiences a deep sense of nostalgia for his youth.

As he strolls down Main Street, Sloan notices that nothing has changed. The same people are still there, doing the same things they did when he was a boy. He visits the music store where he used to take piano lessons, and the old soda fountain where he used to hang out with his friends. Everywhere he goes, he is overwhelmed by memories of the past.

Sloan becomes more and more caught up in his own nostalgia, and he begins to wonder if he has somehow traveled back in time. He visits his childhood home and talks to his parents, who are perplexed by his strange behavior. Sloan realizes that he has been transported back in time, and he becomes obsessed with staying in Homewood.

Despite the warnings of his parents and the local doctor, who tells him that he cannot stay in the past, Sloan stubbornly refuses to leave. He tries to save a young boy from a fall, and is taken to the local hospital for treatment. As he lies in his hospital bed, Sloan realizes that he cannot stay in the past forever. He decides to leave Homewood and return to his life in New York, but he is forever changed by his experience.
