The Vampire Diaries Season 1 Episode 2, titled "The Night of the Comet," follows the aftermath of the brutal attack on Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) in the woods. There, they meet Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), the mysterious new student at their high school. While Elena is immediately drawn to Stefan, Bonnie and Caroline are suspicious of his odd behavior and his reluctance to dance.
As the night wears on, Elena gets caught up in the festival's festivities, while Stefan struggles to resist his urge to feed on human blood. However, their peaceful night is quickly interrupted when Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder), Stefan's older brother, shows up and causes chaos.
Amidst all the drama, a comet passes over Mystic Falls, causing strange and dangerous occurrences throughout the town. Elena and Stefan are forced to work together to unravel the mystery of the comet's effect on their small town. As they grow closer, Elena is left wondering if Stefan is the man she's been searching for all her life - or if he's something much more dangerous.
Overall, "The Night of the Comet" is an exciting second episode that sets the stage for the drama and romance that characterizes The Vampire Diaries franchise. With new characters being introduced and old relationships being tested, this episode has something for everyone.
