Carrie Wells, a former police detective, is leading a peaceful life in Syracuse, New York as a saleswoman in a hardware store, having left the force and New York City after a personal tragedy. She suffers from hyperthymesia, a rare medical condition that gives her the ability to vividly remember every detail of every moment of her life, allowing her brain to be a perfect instant replay recorder for her past. But it's this extraordinary gift that is both a blessing and a curse for her.

Carrie is brought back to her old life as a detective when she is approached by her former partner, NYPD homicide detective Al Burns, who requests her help with a case involving the murder of a young woman, Rachel. Though initially reluctant to re-enter the world of law enforcement, Carrie is soon drawn into the investigation upon learning that the victim was the daughter of a man she once crossed paths with - a man she had arrested years ago - and with whom she shares a complex past.

Throughout the investigation, Carrie's skills and abilities prove invaluable in uncovering new leads, providing crucial insights and evidence, and ultimately solving the case. Along the way, she must also navigate the personal and professional tensions that come with rejoining the department's ranks, as well as the emotional and psychological challenges that her remarkable memory presents.

As the investigation progresses, Carrie and Al must sift through a web of suspects, motives, and possible connections - from Rachel's boyfriend and ex-boyfriend to the powerful and corrupt Manhattan millionaire, Peter Raskin, who may hold the key to the case. At the same time, Carrie is also dealing with her unresolved feelings towards Al, and her lingering guilt and trauma over the events that led her to leave the force.

As the truth behind Rachel's murder is revealed, Carrie and Al must work together to bring the killer to justice and also bring closure to the victim's shattered family. The episode concludes with Carrie standing in the rain, reflecting on the case and her own past, as she grapples with the decision of whether to return to her former career.
