In the second season of Veep, episode 7 titled "Shutdown," the show takes a dive into the government shutdown that occurred in 2013. As Vice President Selina Meyer continues to work towards getting the government running, she finds herself in a predicament as her own staff is not exempt from the shutdown.

Selina Meyer finds herself working around the clock in order to put out fires sparked by the government shutdown. One thing that makes her job harder is the lack of support she is receiving from her own colleagues. As her team fails to come through for her, she is forced to rely on her own instincts in order to help the president keep the government running.

In this episode, Selina's team is constantly in and out of her office as they struggle to keep up with the demands of the shutdown. Although the episode is centred around Selina's struggle to get the government running, we see the ripple effect that the shutdown is having on other departments.

The episode also takes a dive into how vital branding and messaging can be to a politician. Selina's team is constantly brainstorming ways to spin the shutdown in their favour, ultimately leading them to a hashtag that is trending on Twitter.

The plot thickens as Selina's team struggles to keep up with the demands of their jobs. This leads to the discovery of a secret website that was set up by the government to keep essential services running during the shutdown. The website soon becomes a hot topic for Selina's team as they try to figure out how to utilize it.

In a season that is already full of laughs, "Shutdown" brings the comedic element to a head. One of the standout moments of the episode is when Gary (played by Tony Hale) goes head-to-head with Amy (played by Anna Chlumsky) in a hotly contested (and hilarious) dispute over a sandwich.

As the episode draws to a close, it becomes apparent that nobody on Selina's team is immune to the shutdown. The episode ends on a cliffhanger as we are left to wonder how things will play out for Selina and her team in the coming days.

In conclusion, "Shutdown" is a well-written episode that perfectly captures the chaos that ensued during the 2013 government shutdown. The episode is full of laughs and keeps the audience on the edge of their seat as they watch Selina navigate the tricky waters of politics during a crisis. Ultimately, the episode serves as a reminder that politics is a game that requires quick thinking and a solid team to back you up.
