The episode starts off with Veronica reminiscing over the events that led to her becoming a private investigator. She takes the audience back to her high school days before everything went downhill for her. We see Veronica's parents, Keith Mars, a former sheriff, and Lianne Mars, a recovering alcoholic, as they try to maintain a stable household and keep their daughter out of trouble. Fast forward to the present day, we see Veronica still trying to cope with the aftermath of her friend's death. We also see her helping out her dad in his new private investigation business. In the midst of all this, a new case lands on her lap, and it involves a store owner who might have been a victim of identity theft.

Veronica is determined to help the store owner and begins digging deeper into the case. What starts out as a simple case of identity theft eventually leads her down a rabbit hole of lies and deceit. She discovers that the store owner might not be as innocent as she first appears and that there are people willing to go to extreme lengths to keep their secrets hidden.

As Veronica uncovers more and more about the case, she also uncovers secrets about her own past. She discovers that her mother may have had a bigger role to play in her friend's murder than she originally thought. We see Veronica struggling to come to terms with this new-found knowledge and dealing with the emotions that come with it.
