The fourth episode of the fourth season of the historical drama television series Vikings aired on March 10, 2016, and was titled "Yol." The episode follows the aftermath of a major battle between the Viking warriors led by Lagertha and the Franks led by Emperor Charles.

The episode opens with Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) and her warriors returning victorious from the Battle of Paris. The mood is jubilant, with the Vikings celebrating their triumph with song and dance. However, Lagertha is not content, as she continues to feel the pain of losing her daughter Gyda and her husband Ragnar (Travis Fimmel).

Meanwhile, Ragnar recovers from his wounds in Kattegat, where he has been exiled by Lagertha and the other Danish leaders. He is haunted by his own past and the ghosts of his failures, which he relives in vivid nightmares. Despite his physical and psychological pain, Ragnar is still determined to regain his power and overthrow those who have betrayed him.

As the Vikings celebrate their victory, they also prepare for the traditional ritual of Yol, which marks the transition from winter to spring. The ceremony includes the lighting of huge bonfires, which symbolize the sun's rebirth and the renewal of life. It is a time for feasting, drinking, and lovemaking, as the Vikings indulge in their primal instincts and seek to connect with their gods.

During the Yol festivities, Lagertha is unexpectedly visited by Kalf (Ben Robson), a former ally and lover who betrayed her and usurped her earldom. Kalf offers her a peace agreement, which would see him return her lands and share power with her as his wife. Lagertha considers his proposal, torn between her desire for revenge and her wish to regain her status and protect her people.

Elsewhere, Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) is tortured by the Frankish bishop, who wants to force him to reveal the secret of the Viking ships that allowed them to breach his city's defenses. Floki endures the pain and insults with stoic defiance, refusing to betray his fellow Vikings and their leader Ragnar.

As the Yol celebrations continue, the atmosphere becomes increasingly tense and unpredictable. Old rivalries resurface, and new conflicts emerge, fueled by jealousy, envy, and desire. Relationships are tested, loyalties are questioned, and alliances are formed and broken.

The episode culminates in a shocking twist, which sets the stage for further betrayals and confrontations in the coming episodes. It is a reminder that in the world of Vikings, nothing is certain, and anyone can fall victim to the brutal realities of power, passion, and survival.

Overall, "Yol" is a compelling and intense episode that explores the psychological and emotional complexities of the characters, while also showcasing the show's stunning visual and musical style. It is a welcome addition to the already impressive legacy of Vikings and an indication of the greatness yet to come.
