Waking the Dead was a British police procedural drama that aired from 2000 to 2011. The first episode, titled "Waking the Dead: Part 1," aired on September 4th, 2000.

The episode begins with the discovery of the body of a 17-year-old girl, Rachel Callaghan, who disappeared in 1991. The case had been closed and forgotten until a building site uncovers her remains. The case is assigned to the Cold Case department of the Metropolitan Police, where Detective Superintendent Peter Boyd (Trevor Eve) heads the investigation. Boyd is a hard, driven man, haunted by his own tragic experiences, and is eager to solve the decades-old mystery.

Boyd and his team gather evidence from the crime scene and begin to piece together the events leading up to Rachel's disappearance. One of the first leads they uncover is that she was last seen with a group of friends at a party in 1991, but none of them are forthcoming about what happened that night. Boyd believes that someone in the group may be responsible for Rachel's death, and that their reluctance to talk is a sign of guilt.

Boyd's team consists of psychologist Dr. Grace Foley (Sue Johnston), whose specialty is profiling suspects, Detective Sergeant Mel Silver (Claire Goose), who is the team's computer expert, and Detective Constable Spencer Jordan (Wil Johnson), who is the newest member of the team and eager to prove himself.

As the investigation progresses, the team uncovers a web of lies and secrets. Rachel had a troubled home life, and her parents are reluctant to reveal any information that might cast their family in a negative light. Meanwhile, her friends from the party seem to be hiding something, and there are indications that they may have been involved in drugs and illegal activity.

Boyd has a difficult time as he tries to navigate the case. He is beset by flashbacks of his own daughter's death, which he believes he could have prevented if he had acted differently. This tragedy has affected him deeply, and has caused him to behave in a reckless and unpredictable manner. He frequently clashes with his colleagues, particularly Grace, whom he sees as intrusive and overly analytical.

Despite these challenges, the team works tirelessly to bring Rachel's killer to justice. Through a combination of forensic evidence, witness statements, and psychological profiling, they begin to close in on the truth. As they get closer to cracking the case, tensions between the team members rise, and Boyd is forced to confront his own demons if he hopes to solve the mystery.

"Waking the Dead: Part 1" is a gripping and atmospheric crime drama, with a strong focus on character development and psychological exploration. The performances are excellent, particularly Trevor Eve as the brooding and complex Peter Boyd. The episode sets up the overarching themes and dynamics of the show, and establishes it as a compelling and intelligent addition to the detective genre.
