In the fifth season of the popular television documentary series, Who Do You Think You Are?, Valerie Bertinelli takes center stage, delving deep into the roots of her family tree and discovering fascinating stories about her ancestors.

In this fourth episode of the season, Valerie sets out to uncover the truth about her maternal grandfather, Andrew Brescia, who died when she was just a young girl. Along the way, Valerie uncovers a tale of tragedy and hardship that reveals much about her own family history.

Valerie starts her journey by traveling to her hometown of Shaker Heights, Ohio, where she grew up with her mother, Nancy. She meets with her cousins, who provide some background on Andrew, a man they describe as a bit of a mystery. They inform Valerie that Andrew had four children with his wife, Alma, before dying suddenly in a car accident.

Valerie hits a roadblock early on in her research when she discovers that Andrew was not a naturalized citizen of the United States. His Italian birth certificate lists his name as "Andrea," and the family is unsure when or why he changed it to "Andrew." However, Valerie manages to track down a marriage certificate that reveals Andrew and Alma were wed in Erie, Pennsylvania, which leads her to further explore that area.

Valerie discovers that Andrew and Alma lived in the small town of Warren, Pennsylvania, where she meets with a local historian who shares some historical documents that shed light on the area's Italian immigrant community. Valerie learns that many Italians settled in Warren in the early 20th century to work in local industries such as lumber and glass production.

Valerie's research takes her to other small towns in the area, where she finds evidence of Andrew's involvement in the local community. She learns that he was a member of the Warren Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization that provided support and fellowship to members. Valerie also discovers that Andrew was involved in local politics, serving as a justice of the peace for a time.

As Valerie continues her search, she uncovers more and more information about Andrew's life and work. She discovers that he was a painter and decorator, and she finds pictures of some of the homes he painted. Valerie also finds a newspaper article that reveals that Andrew was involved in a violent altercation, which landed him in jail for a brief time.

Valerie's research takes an emotional turn when she learns that Andrew's young daughter, Rosemarie, died tragically at the age of 12. Valerie meets with a local historian who shares some documents revealing the circumstances of the girl's death. Valerie visits the location where Rosemarie died and is moved to tears as she reflects on the tragedy.

As her journey continues, Valerie discovers more about Andrew's relationship with Alma and his family. She learns that Alma's family was not supportive of the marriage, disapproving of Andrew's Italian heritage. Valerie also uncovers evidence suggesting that Alma may have had an affair with another man during the marriage.

In the end, Valerie's research leads her to discover more about the circumstances of Andrew's death. She learns that he was driving home from a Knights of Columbus meeting when his car was hit by a train. Valerie visits the location of the accident and is deeply moved as she reflects on the tragedy that cut short her grandfather's life.

Through this episode, Valerie Bertinelli gains a greater understanding of her grandfather and her family's past. She discovers stories of hardship, tragedy, and resilience that have shaped her own life story.
