In the hilarious and light-hearted pilot episode of Work It season 1, we are introduced to the charismatic and quirky characters who navigate their way through the wild and wacky world of competitive dance. Set in the colorful backdrop of Washington, D.C., this feel-good comedy explores the lengths people will go to in order to achieve their dreams and the unexpected friendships that can form along the way.
The episode begins with our protagonist, Lee Standish (played by the talented Ben Koldyke), embracing a major career change after losing his job as a car salesman. Determined to provide for his wife, Connie (played by the lovely Beth Lacke), and their three children, Lee decides to apply for a highly sought-after corporate sales position at the pharmaceutical company Affamax.
But there's a catch. The company recently implemented a new employment policy that requires all candidates to have a background in contemporary dance. Despite not having any dance experience, Lee is undeterred and becomes convinced that he and his best friend, Angel Ortiz (played by the energetic Amaury Nolasco), can transform themselves into "the ladies" (as they refer to their female alter egos) in order to secure the job.
Undeterred by the obstacles ahead, Lee and Angel enlist the help of an eccentric dance instructor named Grace (played brilliantly by Rebecca Mader). Grace is a former professional dancer who willingly takes on the role of training Lee and Angel, albeit reluctantly at first. Her tough-love approach and unique teaching methods contribute to some humorous and memorable moments throughout the episode.
As the duo embarks on their dance journey, they find themselves immersed in a world filled with spray tans, high heels, and cutthroat dance competitions. Lee and Angel must learn to embrace their newfound femininity and navigate the comical challenges that arise from their unconventional approach to dance.
Along the way, Lee and Angel form unexpected bonds with their fellow dance classmates. Their fellow aspiring dancers include Cindy (played by Rochelle Aytes), a sharp and talented lawyer who seeks an outlet for her creative side, and Pamela (played by fantastic Hannah Sullivan), a free-spirited and bubbly young woman with dreams of stardom.
Outside of the dance studio, we also get a glimpse into the personal lives of our characters. Lee's wife, Connie, is initially skeptical of his plan but eventually becomes his biggest supporter. Their tender moments and playful banter add depth and heart to the episode, showcasing the enduring love between the couple despite their circumstances.
As Lee and Angel's training progresses, the episode culminates in an exciting and hilarious dance competition with high stakes. The tension is palpable as Lee and Angel attempt to pull off an unforgettable performance that will secure their future at Affamax.
Packed with laugh-out-loud moments, memorable one-liners, and endearing characters, this pilot episode of Work It sets the tone for a fun-filled season ahead. The show's comedic timing, infectious energy, and heartwarming themes make it a delightful watch for anyone in need of a good laugh and a gentle reminder that sometimes the most unexpected journeys can lead to the greatest rewards.
