Ep 3. 2013 World Series Game 3: Boston Red Sox at St. Louis

  • October 26, 2013

In the third episode of the World Series season 2013, the Boston Red Sox travel to St. Louis for Game 3 of the series. With the series tied at a game apiece, both teams are looking to gain an advantage and take control of the series.

The Red Sox send their ace, Clay Buchholz, to the mound in hopes of shutting down the St. Louis offense. Buchholz has been solid all season and has been dominant in the playoffs, but he will face a tough challenge against a Cardinals lineup that is loaded with dangerous hitters.

On the other side, the Cardinals will hand the ball to Joe Kelly, who will be making his first start of the postseason. Kelly had a solid regular season, but has struggled to find his form in the playoffs. He will need to be at his best to keep the Red Sox offense in check.

The game starts off with both pitchers dominating, as neither team is able to generate much offense in the early innings. The Red Sox finally break through in the top of the fourth inning, when Mike Napoli hits a solo home run to give Boston a 1-0 lead.

St. Louis responds in the bottom half of the inning, as Matt Holliday drives in a run with an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1. The Cardinals threaten to take the lead, but Buchholz is able to work his way out of the jam and keep the game tied.

The Red Sox regain the lead in the top of the fifth inning, when David Ross hits a ground ball that sneaks past the second baseman and allows Xander Bogaerts to score from second base. Boston adds to their lead in the top of the seventh inning, when Jonny Gomes hits a three-run home run to give the Red Sox a 5-1 lead.

St. Louis tries to mount a comeback, scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 5-2. But the Red Sox bullpen comes in and shuts the door, as Junichi Tazawa and Koji Uehara combine to pitch the final two innings and preserve the victory for Boston.

The win gives the Red Sox a 2-1 lead in the series and puts them in a strong position to take control of the series. With Game 4 looming, both teams will need to make adjustments and come out ready to play if they hope to come away with a victory.
