The film has a series of reenactments and interviews; Obama's life is compared to D'Souza's life; D'Souza's theory is that Obama's early life has influenced the decision he made since becoming leader of the country.

The film is the 4th highest grossing film of all time, as it made a little over $33 million dollars in the United States alone. Many of the movie's critics believe the movie is partisan, and will not influence any political group to vote for Obama. This group of critics include: Variety, Time, and the New York Times. Many conservative people have enjoyed watching the film as it's known for its good production values. The start of the movie is D'Souza talking about his experiences going up as an Indian-American, and how he had to immigrate to the United States.

He points out how his life was very similar to Obama's early life. The film's location then changes to Indonesia, and it shows how his mother and stepfather influenced his life. The film goes into how his absentee father affected his life, and D'Souza interviews his step brother named George Obama. When his parents become estranged, he moved to Hawaii to live with his grandparents. He ends up meeting a guy by the name of Frank Marshall Davis, and he goes to Columbia. While at the college, the film suggests he was influenced by anti-colonialist people. There are parts from Obama's audio book called "Dreams from My Father" in the story.

D'Souza then discusses how Obama's father influenced his son. This has a lot to deal with the decisions that Obama has made as the American president. Obama's need to "reshape" the United States has come from these's anti-colonialist view. D'Souza then comes there is "founding fathers" in Obama's past, and these people are: Bill Ayers, Roberto Unger, Frank Marshall Davis, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, and Edward Said. You will have to watch the movie to see what happens next! Regardless of your political values, you will enjoy watching the film because it brings truths to light that most people do not know about Obama's life.
