The storyline is set in an isolated small town in Barrow, Alaska. People are preparing for its yearly 30 days of night, which is a time when the sun does not rise and darkness covers the area for 30 days. While the town is busy preparing, a foreigner riding a large boat rows for land. He goes to Barrow and sabotages the town's means of transportation and communication with the outside world. This includes the phone lines and the pack of Siberian Huskies used by the townsfolk. The town's sheriff, Eben Oleson, investigates the crime scene where the dogs were killed.
As Eben drives to perform other law enforcement duties, his former wife-to-be, Stella Oleson, calls. Stella informs Eben that she missed the last plane that leaves from Alaska and that she won't be able to leave for the next 30 days. Instead of picking her up from the airport, Eben dispatches another officer to pick her up. Though they attempt to avoid each other, Eben runs into Stella when he confronts the seemingly deranged drifter in the diner who is found responsible for killing the dogs. Eben immediately apprehends him and locks him up in jail.
While locked up in jail, the drifter taunts the people, warning them that death is approaching. Soon after, unidentified creatures barrage through the local telecom facility and power supply center thereby causing the entire town to lose its power. With no lights and no means of transportation and communication, the townsfolk remains vulnerable to attacks. One by one, they are killed and drunk dry by vampires that move and murder unreservedly.
