Atlantis: The Lost Empire

"Atlantis is waiting..."

Atlantis: The Lost Empire is a Disney animated film from 2001, as well as the first science fiction film animated by Disney. The film features voice talent from actors which include Michael J. Fox, Cree Summer, and Leonard Nimoy and makes use of Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise for its direction. The film begins as protagonist Milo Thatch, a scholar, tries to convince his university to fund an expedition to Atlantis. Despite being denied, Milo rouses the interest of eccentric businessman Preston Whitmore. Whitmore maintains the journal of Milo's grandfather which contains photographic proof of the lost continent. Whitmore has hired an Atlantis expedition team consisting Milo, as well as an Italian demolition man named Vinny, a French geologist named Mole, an African-American medical officer named Dr. Sweet, a female mechanic named Audrey, an elderly radio operator named Mrs. Packard, and a hillbilly mess cook named Cookie all led by Commander Rourke and his right hand woman Helga.

After diving underwater within a massive submarine named the Ulysses, the crew encounters a massive crustacean guardian, the Leviathan. While the Leviathan destroys the submarine, the expedition team escapes into a grotto which matches the description given within the journal as the entrance to Atlantis.

Soon after finding Atlantis, the expedition team encounters the natives which include their Princess, Kida. Kida speaks with Milo, discovering that Atlantean is the base for most of modern languages. After meeting the king of Atlantis and Milo goes off with Kida to translate the ancient Atlantean, Rourke orders the team to loot and plunder. They soon find the "heart" of Atlantis, a massive blue crystal. Kida makes contact with the heart, becoming a crystalline being. Rourke's lust for treasure gets the better of him and Kida's crystal state passes over to him. With Rourke dealt with, the crew leaves peacefully, except for Milo who decides to stay behind with Kida.
