Watch B.A.P.S.

Working as waitresses in a soul food restaurant in Decatur, Georgia, two girls (Nisi and Mickey) with a dream to open the world's first hair salon/soul food restaurant combination are looking for a way to earn enough money to do it. Unfortunately they aren't likely to ever make that much in their dead-end job(s), and they aren't likely to find the kind of jobs in Decatur that would make a difference. So they pack up and fly to Los Angeles, California, on a mission to make some quick cash.

While auditioning for a Heavy D music video they are approached by the director for an "acting" job. He is the nephew of an aging millionaire and would like them to help care for (and fleece) the old man over the course of a week. Apparently Nisi, played by Halle Berry, looks like the former love of Mr.Blakemore (Martin Landau), a Ms. Lily whose granddaughter Nisi will be playing. In the course of this week they'll show Blakemore how to live again, and he'll show them how to be real "B.A.P.s" in return. As for the fleecing scam? Nisi and Mickey are two Black American Princesses who aren't about to allow themselves to be used.

B.A.P.s (Black American Princesses) is a fish-out-of-water comedy from 1997 written by Troy Beyer and directed by Robert Townsend (The Parenthood). It stars Halle Berry in her first leading role as well as Martin Landau (Frankenweenie). It also features the talents of the late comedian Bernie Mac as Mr. Johnson, and actress Natalie Desselle-Reid (Set It Off) as Mickey. At the 1998 Acapulco Black Film Festival, Halle Berry was nominated for Best Actress. This film runs for 91 minutes and is rated PG-13 for some incidents of adult language.
