Watch Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me

"Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me" is a bittersweet documentary about the formation and tragic dissolution of 1970s Memphis band Big Star, whose commercial failure during the band's brief tenure was only redeemed in later decades during a critical reevaluation of the three massively influential records released by the group over the span of only a few years.

Splitting songwriting duties between musical geniuses Chris Bell and Alex Chilton (although the project would essentially become Chilton's solo project after Bell's departure following the financial failure of Big Star's first release) the band is remarkable for very much being a group who seemed to exist outside of their own time. Like another commercial failure of the era whose records would only later go on to become classics, Nick Drake, Big Star earned later acclaim due to their timelessness, even though at the time their sweet, Beatles-y harmonies and use of acoustic guitars were idiosyncratic compared to their peers, other than Badfinger or Raspberries, on 1970s rock airwaves.

Soon after the band's dissolution, a distraught Bell crashed his car in a fatal accident, and Chilton recently passed away due to a heart attack that might have been prevented if the singer, whose finances were never secure despite his reputation as a brilliant songwriter, had been able to afford healthcare.
