Black Robe

"In the winter of 1634, an extraordinary man began a perilous journey into the North American wilderness."

Motivated by religious beliefs, a young Jesuit priest from France seeks contact with North American Indian tribes. In his mission to convert tribes to Catholicism, he suffers winter hardship, capture by the Iroquois, and the realization that he has brought destruction to the very tribes he hoped to save. The young priest, Father Laforgue, is convinced of the righteousness of his own faith but comes to realize the Indians have their own religious beliefs and no desire to become like him. He finds it necessary to battle loneliness, cultural conflict, and physical desire in a dark and dismal world.

Father Laforgue's harrowing journey with the Algonquins reveals how members of the tribe depend on each other for survival. The connection between an Algonquin man and his wife, along with a love affair between their daughter and a young Frenchman, depicts the culture of the North American Indian tribe in the early days of European settlement in Canada.
