Chances Are

Chances Are is the 1989 comedy drama about a young attorney who was killed in 1964 and reincarnated in the body of a law student over twenty years later. Corrine Jeffries (Cybill Shepherd) still pines over her deceased husband Louie (Christopher MacDonald), who died leaving her with a young daughter to raise. Louie's best friend Philip Train (Ryan O'Neal) is in love with Corrine, but much to his chagrin, the feeling isn't mutual.

Corrine and Louie's daughter Miranda (Mary Stuart Masterson) is following her father's footsteps at Yale. There she meets law student Alex Finch (Robert Downey Jr.), who works at the newspaper owned by Ben Bradley (Henderson Forsythe). After befriending Alex, Philip invites him to dinner at the Jeffries' house. Once there Alex has a number of flashbacks and soon realizes that he is Corrine's husband reincarnated. Alex's affections for Miranda now transfer to Corrine, whom he has every intention of pursuing.

The mix-up leads to a number of comedic events and frustration for Phillip, who is trying to romance Corrine and establish himself as Miranda's father. Alex soon comes to the realization that a relationship with Corrine would be too complicated, so he steps aside for Philip.

Alex turns his attentions to the corrupt Judge Fenwick, who is still on the bench. Alex confronts the judge in open court about pictures that exist of him taking bribes several years prior. After the incident with the judge, an accident lands Alex in the hospital. He is administered a shot that was not given to him the night he died years ago to make him forget his past. He awakens with no memory of his former life and happily resumes his relationship with Miranda. The judge is charged with taking bribes, and Philip is now free to pursue a relationship with Corrine.
