The film follows successful the ophthalmologist, Judah Rosenthal and his friend, independent filmmaker, Clifford Stern. Judah is considered a respectable family man, though he is having an illicit affair with Dolores Paley, a flight attendant. After Dolores realizes that Judah will not be leaving his wife, she threatens to inform her of the affair.

Dolores writes a letter to Miriam that Judah manages to intercept and destroy. However, she continues to threaten him, this time with details about the many questionable financial deals that Judah has made. He confides in one of his patients, Ben who is a rabbi. Ben advises Judah to be honest and forthright with his wife. However, Judah does not see how he can do this without destroying his marriage and his life.

In desperation, Judah seeks out his brother for help. Jack arranges to hire a hitman to murder Dolores. Before the body is found, Judah obtains the letters from her home. Guilt-ridden, Judah turns to the religion he always ignored for guidance.

Cliff is hired to make a documentary designed to celebrate his pompous brother in law Lester's work and life. As Cliff grows to further despise Lester, he begins to fall for his associate producer, Halley Reed (played by Mia Farrow). Halley departs for London for a producing job with Lester and Cliff is stunned to learn that she is engaged to Lester.

Cliff learns that Lester sent Halley bouquets of roses weekly in London, realizing that he could never compete with that adoration.

Judah and Cliff meet up at the wedding of Rabbi Ben’s daughter by accident. Judah has since worked through the guilt surrounding the killing. He and Cliff have a discussion concerning morality. Judah says that over time, difficulties pass. However, Cliff insists that people always need to be accountable for their crimes and misdemeanors.
