Days of Heaven

Days of Heaven is a dramatic film that won multiple awards throughout the world, including Best Director at Cannes for Terrence Malick (only his second film as a director at the time), and an Oscar for Best Cinematograohy awarded to Nestor Almendros. The film stars Richard Gere, Brooke Adams and Sam Shepard. Gere and Adams play Bill and Abby, a poverty stricken couple from Chicago looking for a way to improve their destitute lives. They travel to the South in hopes of fortune, pretending to be brother and sister, not lovers.

In the Panhandle of Texas, they meet a man known only as The Farmer (Sam Shepard), who employs them to help out with his harvest on his farm. During their time working on the farm, Bill and Abby discover that The Farmer is dying, with less than a year to live. The Farmer confesses his love for Abby and asks her to marry him. Thinking he will die soon, Bill and Abby continue their pretense as siblings so Abby can marry The Farmer and become wealthy after his death.
